Gardner's theory proposes that individuals have diverse types of intelligences, which influence how they learn and excel in specific subjects. In high school, I found that teacher’s helped students identify their strengths and intelligences through self-reflection and assessment. Likewise, teachers offered students with choices in learning activities, allowing us to engage with content in ways that align with our strengths (i.e., demonstrate learning through written essays, artistic projects, presentation, etc).

In grade 7, my partner and I made a small model of a car that can be driven in any direction. It was shaped like a ufo with wheels. My partner and I were able to collaborate effectively on this project. The second project I did was in grade 7, I did another project with a different partner where we made dry ice bubbles. It was a more hands-on experiment. We had to learn to handle the dry ice safely.

The project gave us the freedom to best demonstrate our learning in a variety of different forms. This opportunity demonstrates using one's strongest natural intelligence to support the different learning styles. By having these options as a student, I recognized and developed these strengths to better my knowledge and understanding in a fulfilling and rewarding way.

At my high school, the way I learned often reflected Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. One example occurred in my grade 10 history class. My teacher assigned a project where we had to write a love song inspired by songs of the 1950/60s. The assignment incorporated my two intelligences of musical and linguistic abilities. My teacher integrated many other intelligences into her teaching through a variety of different activities, including drama skits, visual art projects, and problem-solving workshops.

In my grade 4 class I had a male teacher who based the setting of the classroom on Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. At the beginning of the year he had us take the test that would identify the type of learner that we were and the next week the classroom was completely changed. He had us as the interpersonal learners in a table group of desks where we could sit and collaborate on our work together. Another example of this was for the kinesthetic learners he had an exercise area of the classroom where these learners could do their work while walking on a treadmill or bouncing on the exercise balls.

I seen this throughout my educational career but mostly in my public school education. Teachers took more time to tune lessons to students particular intelligences such as doing a math lesson and incorporating a musical or movement component into the lesson. The curriculum also allowed for students to be introduced to other intelligences or learning styles that they were not “strong” in, which held to expose students to other ways of learning. On the other hand, I felt that university was more focused on linguistic and logical intelligences.

My grade 6-8 science teacher allowed students to have control over their own learning (sometimes). For example, he allowed us to select our own research topics which allowed us to be more engaged. By giving us agency, he created a enlightening learning environment, allowing the class to develop a deeper connection with science.
