A strategy we used to communicate our research with a wider audience was by using the social media platform Instagram. We created an account: https://www.instagram.com/guardiansofthegut/ and shared various posts and animated videos about the Gut microbiome, ultra processed food and more. The main goal being to share information in a simple way that people without a background in science would be able to understand. We also created an informative leaflet which can be accessed by scanning the QR code, or clicking the following link: cdn3.me-qr.com/pdf/878f0e1c-6777-4c6b-b597-ea68cb3ccddc.pdf?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaYKsDWKvlroZIUYizuWIJ4MVJqFq_z_B2g7K4k3VLet1bF1D1J8m9RuBaI_aem_ezNH0cRBuLBf4fb-mk4iSg

My team Reflections and the impact of our Project:

🎖️ Ibrahim Bekhit - NMU

Personal Reflection:

It is something new to try and a great idea for implementing teamwork. This project has been a key to doors that have been closed for a long time. It has allowed us to develop, expand our horizons, pay attention to what surrounds us and try to solve problems that may become an obstacle for us one day.

Impact of our Project:

What I see in the research topic that we have done is that it has shed light on a hidden problem that is not fully known by medical staff or people in general. It has always been the thing that is difficult to be seen, it's difficult to believe in its existence. Therefore, I think that our topic has touched on a hidden part of the tasks of global health and will have a positive impact in the near future.

🎖️ Ahmed Adel - NMU

Personal Reflection

Working on this project was a truly enriching experience. It gave me the opportunity to engage with a diverse group of individuals, fostering collaboration and exchanging ideas from various perspectives. This project allowed me to push beyond my comfort zone, explore new approaches to problem-solving, and refine both my academic and interpersonal skills.

Impact of Our Project

Our project emphasized the often-overlooked challenges surrounding neurodegenerative diseases like (ALS )in developing countries. It brought attention to the disparities in awareness and access to advanced treatments. Moreover, it proposed practical solutions aimed at narrowing this issue , with the hope of inspiring future initiatives to prioritize these critical issues.

🎖️ Osama Mohamed - NMU

Personal reflection

For me This project was a great experience for me to work and collaborate with diverse individuals and fostered my team work, it also developed my prespective in global health challenges facing us and how to be creative in finding solutions to solve it .

It also helped to know about my abilities and what i need to improve in future.

Impact of our project

Our project focus on one of the neurodegenerative diseases which is ALS which may be unfamiliar with a-lot of people including health care professionals. We brought attention and awareness to this disease .

Also project highlighted solutions to be taken in improving ttt and to be accessible to all patients ,improving research in this field and raising awareness about the life of ALS Patient.

🎖️ Yomna Omar - NMU

Personal Reflection

Working on this project was surprisingly nostalgic -it helped me recapture the sense of an international community, embracing differences and making new friends. On top of that, it helped resurface repressed creativity and broadened my skill set.

Impact of our project

I believe our project helped shed the light on how neurodegenerative diseases are neglected in developing countries despite the quickly advancing research and findings. Not only that, but it highlighted solutions that are relevant to bridging that gap.

🎖️ Amr Seliman - NTU

Personal Reflection:

Participating in this COIL project has been a transformative experience for me, both academically and personally. As an Egyptian myself, collaborating with peers from NMU felt deeply meaningful, as it allowed me to bridge my academic journey in the UK with my cultural roots in Egypt. It pushed me to step out of my comfort zone, hone my leadership skills, and foster a sense of teamwork across different academic and cultural backgrounds. This project not only expanded my knowledge but also strengthened my appreciation for collaborative, cross-cultural learning.

Impact of our Project:

The research topic we explored shed light on a critical issue often overlooked in global health discussions. By addressing a problem that is both under-researched and underestimated, our work has contributed to raising awareness among healthcare professionals and the wider community. This project has revealed how small, focused initiatives can bring attention to hidden challenges and pave the way for meaningful change.

🎖️ Aya Saad - NTU

Personal reflection

Participating in this project was a great and rewarding experience. It was incredible to see how people from two different universities, with diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, came together to collaborate effectively. This collaboration taught me the value of connection and how it can enhance problem solving and creativity. I gained many new connections and valuable experiences that I will carry forward in my career. Although the pressure was intense at times, I truly enjoyed working together as a team, learning from each other, and growing both personally and professionally. This project has opened doors to new opportunities and perspectives that I have not considered before.

Impact of our Project:

ALS addresses an important global health challenge that remains unsolved . Neurodegenerative diseases like ALS are often overlooked despite their significant impact on patients, families, and healthcare systems. Through this project, we aimed to focussed on a condition that is not widely recognized by medical professionals or the public. By highlighting the challenges faced by those affected and exploring potential solutions, we hope to inspire future discussions research, , drive awareness, and inform impactful interventions.

🎖️ Marzoga Mohammed - NTU

Personal Reflection:

This project has been a valuable experience, offering an opportunity to collaborate effectively and think critically. It encouraged us to broaden our perspectives and address challenges that are often overlooked. Through this process, I have gained a deeper appreciation for teamwork and its role in generating practical solutions for future obstacles.

Impact of Our Project:

Our research has highlighted an important but largely overlooked issue, one that remains unfamiliar to many, including healthcare professionals and the general public. By focusing on this topic, we have brought attention to a neglected area of global health. I believe this project will raise awareness and inspire further research and positive action in this field.

🎖️ Mayi Nantale - NTU

Personal reflection

Participating in the international collaborative project was an incredible experience that deepened my understanding of ALS and global health challenges. This project not only expanded my knowledge but also strengthened my teamwork and communication skills. It was rewarding to contribute to raising awareness about ALS, and the experience has left a lasting impact on my perspective and goals in healthcare.

Impact of the project

Our group created a video and presentation to educate others about ALS and how to improve access to treatment. This process helped me develop skills in simplifying complex information for a wider audience and highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and proper care.

🎖️ Nhoredelle Alcid - NTU

Personal reflection

Participating in a group project with students from NMU on a presentation about ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) was an eye-opening and deeply enriching experience. Collaborating across cultures highlighted the universal importance of teamwork, communication, and empathy. It was fascinating to see how our diverse perspectives enriched our approach to understanding ALS, from the medical and social implications to the emotional challenges faced by patients and families.

Through this project, I developed several skills that I will carry forward. Working across different time zones and navigating cultural nuances taught me adaptability and effective communication. Researching ALS not only expanded my knowledge but also deepened my appreciation for the power of awareness and advocacy in driving change. Furthermore, creating a cohesive presentation with input from multiple voices strengthened my ability to collaborate and synthesize information in a way that is clear and impactful.

Impact of the project

On a personal level, this project reminded me of the human side of diseases like ALS—the resilience of those affected and the need for continued support and innovation. It was inspiring to work alongside passionate peers and to see how our combined efforts could create something meaningful. This experience reinforced my belief in the value of cross-cultural collaboration and the importance of using knowledge to make a difference.
