You said that your free time consisted of taking over Athens, but if that was your whole purpose in life, what would bet point of living? How would it feel to constantly try to outdo someone else, you wouldn't have any sense of individuality. At least in Athens people were allowed to become things besides warriors.

You're right, most people in Athens could become something other than warriors, deceased corpses. Athens was an incredibly small city where people were never less than 10'feet from one another. Diseases like Malaria spread like butter.

Males in Spata were sent off to live in army schools for thirteen years, and had to serve in the army until they were thirty, then they were finally able to get married. But they couldn't retire until they were 60 years old! That's 40 years of work, and constant physical training.

In the article, the author says that the only people allowed to contribute to the democracy had to be a citizen. Therefore 80% of your people could not contribute. Is that even a democracy?!?

It may not be a fair democracy, but it's better than just five men ruling over everybody. These rulers tried to control the mind of their people so that they wouldn't try to rebel. And by the way, only 10% of Spartans were citizens.
