People often say, “Green is good for the eyes.”Science also shows that green can calm the mind and help people relax.

Since I came to study in New Taipei, it has been hard to see wide stretches of greenery.Fortunately, there is a beautiful garden at my school, and I have grown to like it more and more.

From above, I can see a monument in the center, surrounded by grass, walkways, and flower beds.The outermost layer of trees forms a square, like gentle green ripples spreading across a quiet lake, soft and rhythmic.

There is a health center on the first floor, and next to it is a small path that leads to the garden. As you go upstairs, you’ll find the classrooms. When you open the classroom windows, you can see the garden outside—especially from the fifth floor, where the view of the entire garden is the clearest.

There is a student counseling center on the fifth floor. What’s special about it is that the corridor railings are made of PC panels, so when the afternoon sunlight shines in, it looks really beautiful. In addition, starting from the third floor, the garden is hardly visible because it’s blocked by banyan trees.

I can say for sure that every student will enter this building at least once during their four years here. The building also has passageways that connect it to the other two buildings. However, it’s almost impossible to see the garden from here—unless you’re one of the staff members working in the offices.

I always thought the lawn was just clean and neatly trimmed grass, until I noticed near the monument that some blades were two different shades and curled quietly into shapes like tiny tornadoes—it was so fascinating. In addition, fallen leaves often drift to the edges of the lawn and can be seen everywhere.

From a distance, I thought the splash of yellow was some kind of flower. But as I got closer, I realized the leaves themselves carried two colors — bright yellow and vivid green. It felt as if yellow paint had been splashed across a green canvas, with each leaf showing its own unique pattern.

After looking it up online, I found out that their blooming period is very short—only one day. Though brief, it’s truly beautiful: the flowers start out white or pale pink at dawn, turn pink by noon, and become deep red by evening as they wither.

If the cotton rose gives me a calm and gentle feeling, then the lantana feels passionate and full of energy.
