MODULE 1 - Developing intercultural competences1.1 Why address cultural diversity in schools?

Diversity is an intrinsic part of the nature of man; Each carries its own diversity as it has the characteristics that make it different from others, unique and special.

Today one of the most difficult challenges to be faced is not to cancel any distinction but to include the specific characteristics of each one in a collective design, substantially shared, demonstrating that the differences, considered erroneously a limit and a defect may instead produce a Overall enrichment. The distinctive features of each individual must therefore be designed in a different light or how the values and how the resources for their own growth. The differences must therefore not be reduced or eliminated otherwise this could mean an impoverishment of the diversity and richness of human types and then of those features so unique that everybody has.The function of the school is therefore not only to transmit knowledge, but also to create the conditions for citizens training and the creation of a social conscience. The mediator may, for example, divide the class into small groups and try to facilitate conversation between the subjects in each group; it is a strategy that gives good results if they are established of simple general rules as having respect for each other and not interrupt while he is speaking. He must be very careful not to take sides anywhere and not to express opinions it is essential therefore, that it is impartial. It could also give rise to the discussions at the forum on issues relating to cultural diversity, involving large groups of students.
