The French had used the demilitarization of the Rhineland to strong arm the Germans into paying massive war reparations. This was because Japan relied on American Iron, machine tools, oil, and copper and America was growing dissatisfied with Japan and its war against China.

In August of 1940 the Luftwaffe began bombing British air and naval bases, harbors, and factories to gain air superiority allowing for an invasion of Britain through the English channel. Then in a change of tactics the Luftwaffe began bombing civilian targets to brake British morale. This was a mistake though as it let the British air force factories rebuild the British Royal Air Force.

In June of 1941 Hitler started operation Barbarossa, which was an invasion of the USSR; Germany needed the Slavic states for living space and slave labor. The rapid invasion caused a crisis in the Soviet Union as most of the factories where situated in the west, therefore 1,500 large factories had to be moved to the middle part of the USSR and start with green workers. This led to German armies having more tanks and aircraft during the beginning of the German-Soviet conflict.

During the beginning of 1942 German’s decided to focus less on the occupation of Moscow, the capital of the USSR, and renewed their offensive in Crimea. This opened the way for an invasion into the Soviet Caucasus, which held valuable oil. The occupation of Crimea also held the defensive purpose. Romanian oil fueled the Wehrmacht, and the Soviets could bomb Romanian oil fields from Crimea. There for it was an important point for the Germans to take control of.
