Catherine the Great was known for saying this, “Power without a nation’s confidence is nothing” (google). This quote shows how much Catherine cared about her people’s loyalty and faith in her. Meanwhile, Ivan The Terrible was known for quite the opposite. Andrews tells Ivan had a reputation of being high strung and brutal in his actions (The Vintage news). Even though these two held the same position, there are many important differences and similarities between Catherine the Great and Ivan the Terrible.

There are many things that these memorable rulers had in common. Both were brought in to the royal life young, Maranzani shares at the age of fifteen Catherine, then known as Sophie, was brought to the palace by the then current Czarina Elizabeth to marry her nephew Peter (History.com). Similarly, Andrews informs Ivan was made emperor at the young age of 16. Ivan soon after taking the crown married his first spouse Anastasia Romanova (The Vintage News). Maranzani explains that Catherine married Peter a year after them courting each other (History.com). Maranzani and Andrews agree they went on to have children, both of them having a son as their eldest (The Vintage News, History.com). The monarchs also both truly earned the titles they were given in history.

Differences

Those things, however, are where the similarities end. Andrews says Ivan was born in to royalty(The Vintage News). Meanwhile, Maranzani shows us that Catherine had to marry in to it as the child of a poor Prussian prince, and when she was married to Peter she usurped the throne from him. (History.com). Another difference between the two, is that even though they both married fast, Catherine only married once. Maranzani tells that the two weren’t happy together to begin with, they had a hard time having a child, and it is rumored that her first born wasn’t even her husband's kid (History.com). Andrews talks about how while Ivan’s son was legitimate. Ivan murdered him himself (The Vintage news). Another difference between the two rulers is their married lives. Andrews makes us aware that Ivan was married eight times, two of these women may have just been a fake story. His first wife is the only one thought to be truly loved by him, and the rest were seen as stand-ins (The Vintage News). Maranzani shares that Catherine, though, never getting married again after overthrowing Peter, did have many lovers even while married (History.com) The last important difference is their ruling style. Maranzani mentions that Catherine was an enlightened ruler. She was incredibly ambitious in her expansion and was always open to learning new things (History.com). Andrews Shares, however, that Ivan was quite the opposite. He was paranoid and stubborn (The Vintage news).

Even though these two held the same position, there are many important differences and similarities between Catherine the Great and Ivan the Terrible. Both were strong rulers in their own ways. Catherine was just less paranoid, while Ivan was convinced everyone wanted him dead. The title of Tzar was probably a stressful, this is really just an example of the way the pressure can be used to make a ruler stronger, or drive them insane.
