Youth of the Year by Tami

We need to look at our Youth of the Year program, as a county, and develop a policy for who, what, when, where, why and how we will name our County Wide YOY. We want to excite teens about this opportunity. We want to ensure that all youth that want to participate, receive quality coaching and support to put forth their best effort as a BGCEC member. Your role on this committee is to collectively create a plan / BGCEC policy for board approval, for how we will run the YOY program from beginning to end moving forward. ***PLEASE read the posts below and add your thoughts, confirm you have read the posts by adding a comment.

Focus groups with Tami, consisting of frontline staff, gave their views, thoughts and opinions at all four locations.

The application is a lot to do for teens. (Some thought this was a negative. Some thought this should be expected. Depends on the end incentive.)

Should be a natural part of Keystone.

Not clear what is expected of staff and youth that participate.

Lack of consistency in who is required to complete what for each Club.

Finding great coaches and judges can be a challenge. Mainly because we are not sure what we are coaching.

When only one teen participates for a Club, it seems silly that they would automatically be named the Club's YOY and moved on to next stage.

Same teens year after year.

We need to make some decisions.

Should we run Club level competitions, then bring them together to name a county wide winner as we have in the. past?
Suggested Solutions and Ideas from leadership and front line staff:

Come together as a county and compete. Naming one winner and a runner up. Don't have a specific "Club winner" make incentive bigger for the winner and runner up.

Make it so that someone cannot win back to back. If they win they must sit a year out, or the winner should be required to help the new cohort in some manner.

Have public speaking coach, essay coach, etc. and bring the participants together once or twice a month for sessions to collaborate and receive coaching from these experts.

Layout how this program will work from beginning to the end so that someone can essentially pick up the manual and know what to do and what is expected when from year to year as a staff member.
