At the beginning of the chapter Holden runs off to New York City out of frustration trying to run away from his emotions As soon as he arrives in the city, then, what seemed at first like independence begins to turn into nothing but loneliness.

Although Holden tries to preserve his childhood and youth he thinks of himself that he is an adult, as he passes by buildings and hotels he thinks of the people in the windows having sex as total phoneys, but he refuses to acknowledge that he himself might be as flawed as the people he is calling phoneys. But as Holden continues throughout the city he can't help but call Jane to let her know how he feels since he has been longing for a human interaction and conversation with someone, but Holden does not pursue these feelings because he feels that it will taint her innocence.
