Although Holden tries to preserve his childhood and youth he thinks of himself that he is an adult, as he passes by buildings and hotels he thinks of the people in the windows having sex as total phoneys, but he refuses to acknowledge that he himself might be as flawed as the people he is calling phoneys. But as Holden continues throughout the city he can't help but call Jane to let her know how he feels since he has been longing for a human interaction and conversation with someone, but Holden does not pursue these feelings because he feels that it will taint her innocence.

The significance of him showing the baseball mitt to her must mean that he has found her to be as trustworthy as his own family.

Here, elements of absence and loneliness portray the isolation Holden is experiencing in the hotel.

Holden is mad about her going out with Stradlater, because Stradlater is a pervert who ditches his dates after the first night.

-Even in daily life, Holden lied to his friends about what he wants and is going to do. This shows that he is not close with his friends, he wants to be isolated.

Despite the fact that he himself lies all the time, holden looks down on Ossenburger for what he perceives to be implausible. It shows how Holden sees honesty and dishonesty to be tools for him to further his own biases.
