         <description><![CDATA[<div>Whitman was born on May 31, 1819. His father was a housebuilder and Whitman was the second son of Walter Whitman and Louisa Van Velsor. He came from humble origins. At age 12, he learned how to print and started reading many books. He worked in several careers including as a printer, teacher, and editor. Along with being a humanist, Whitman was an abolitionist who was against slavery. For instance, during the Civil War, he vowed to live a cleansed life. After the war, he helped car for his brother. &nbsp; Throughout his life, he created works of literature including his most famous work Leaves of Grass. But he still struggled to support himself through the fact that he lived on a clerk's salary and spent a lot on gifts for his friends and supplies for his patients. Near the end of his life, he settled in Camden, New Jersey. Whitman died on March 26, 1892 after suffering a stroke six months earlier that left hi paralyzed.</div>]]></description>
