Reflection On The Holocaust Museum

When on our trip to the holocaust museum I was amazed at the knowledge that was still out there and the many survivors and up-standers that I wasn't aware of. Each survivor had a different story and perseverance. The survivors could not have done it before if it wasn't for the up-standers they encountered or the determination they had in them to survive. I came in thinking that they were going to focus on the hate Hitler showed and how many others followed and showed the same hate. I thought I knew that hate was the problem but I came out of those doors now knowing that silence is the true enemy. Many of the survivors are with us because some people knew that what was happening was wrong and that they could not let it happen. Those unknown people are also heroes. In the future we need to know that silence will betray us and lets history repeat itself.

When going to the museum our tour guide shared many stories of survivors and up-standers who fought against the silence and hatred. Here is one of those stories.

A family of two went into the ghettos with another family of 6. Soon after the Couple got pregnant. If there was anything worse that the Nazis hated was Jewish babies. If they were caught they would immediately be punished. The other family promised to keep it a secret. In the beginning of her pregnancy she wasn't showing so it was easy to get around but nearing her end of her pregnancy, the others had to somehow get her food. Everyone gave her a piece of their rations to her so she was strong and healthy. With no pain medication she had to give birth to the little girl in almost silence so no one would suspect. After she delivered the baby would at times cry so they managed to find a friend who wasn't Jewish to make an exist. So they created a genius plan to give the baby some sort of medication to keep her asleep. They put the baby in a coffin and brought it to the Jewish cementary. A Nazi guard asked them what was in there and the couple told them that their baby had recently died. The guard asked to see the baby but the couple told him that the baby died of a disease that if near could also get you sick. They were able to get through the guard and once inside left the baby on the ground. At night the friend came to pick the baby over the fence. A couple days later he came back for the couple and the family that helped them. They went into hiding soon after.
