A scientist who specializes in DNA analysis would use blood, saliva, and other bodily excrements that contain DNA. They would then use DNA fingerprinting to find a match which would eventually lead to a suspect.

A scientist who has mastered fingerprint examinations would go through the crime scene looking for anything that might have been touched by a suspect and carefully would gather those fingerprints. They would then run the fingerprints through a criminal database to see if they got any hits or preserve them to use as evidence in court.

A scientist who's discipline is firearm examination would use bullet casings to identify the type of gun used. They would also be able to see the "fingerprint" made on the casing when it was fired from the gun, and then once they have the weapon they can fire it and compare the two fingerprints to see if they match.

The FBI also supports the local government outside of the lab. They can send different teams based on the different needs of the local police. One team is the Evidence Response Team. This team specializes in collecting and preserving evidence from a crime scene. Another team that the FBI uses is the Crime Scene Surveys and Documentation. This team goes to various crime scenes and photographs everything. With these photos they can turn the crime scene into a 3D model so they can better visualize what could have happened.
