Week 4 has come and gone and it has been a crazy ride in third grade. A number of students have been out each week due to quarantining. There have not been many days where all students have been present in class which has been a challenge in itself. But it is finally time to plan for my observation with the help of my CT and supervisor.

I planned my observation for the week of the 14th-18th of February. It was a little challenging because we were ending one math unit and starting a new one. I decided to start the new unit, area, because I thought I could make it fun and exciting. I starting searching the web on way to make area fun and I finally found one. I decided to pick a hands on activity that I knew the students would love.

I followed the Engage NY Math lessons to come up with my lesson on Area. The objective of the lesson was to find the area of different size boxes by counting and multiplying Cheez-Its. The students would arrange the Cheez-Its in the box to find the area. First they would count the number of Cheez-Its. Then they would multiply the length and width as another strategy to find the area. The sentence frame for the lesson was "The are of this shape is _____ square units."

My observation was pretty good. The students picked up on the new topic very fast, which I was not prepared for. I did think it would be a longer lesson, but it was on the shorter side. The students payed attention very well and were very engaged throughout the whole lesson.
I handed out a worksheet that had different sized boxes and a bag of Cheez-Its to each student. We went through the first two problems together and then I let them do it independently. They would do one on their own and then we would come back as a group to go over it. Then they would do two on their own. Finally they did the last three and they were able to check with the people sitting at their tables to see if they all go the answer correct.
As a little added activity at the end, we flipped over our paper and found the area of the sheet of paper.

I was relieved that my lesson was over. I was extremely nervous when it began, so honestly I was happy I got it over with. I met with my supervisor after and she gave me a lot of good feedback. My lesson was short so she helped me see what additional activities I could add to make it longer. I could have had the students pick something on their desk to find the area of with a partner, was one example we came up with. At the end of the day I was very happy with how the lesson went and I thought it was a good first, fun lesson to have of a new topic before break.

Student teaching is going great and I am excited for my next observation. I have started prepping for it. I am having a little trouble with the SOLAMP Long format so I am spending extra time and care while making this next lesson.
