Our 4th grade team plus one (Kendra, Dottie, Trina, and I) did rotations in the afternoon and each taught something about the Wild West! I taught all about Covered Wagons on the Oregon trail! The students were amazed at how the had to fit everything they owned in a 9 by 4 ft box carriage! Then they had to decide what they felt was important to take in their own Covered wagon. We read a book about the Wild West, took some great pictures using the cute props and played the old Oregon Trail game on the computer. Students were given so much money and they had to determine what the needed (oxen, clothing, food, supplies) to travel the trail! This game was a perfect starter for some great questions and we finished off our day with a reflection time!

The students couldn't believe that they didn't have a store to just pop into and buy a doll or fun stuff like they have today. Educational and FUN here at Carver!!!

It turned out to be too much for one day, but it's been a great week of activities! I made 6 stations that were Wild West themed. 1. Measuring animals to the nearest 1/4 inch. 2. Area and perimeter
3. Fractions on a number line
4. Wagon math ( Addition, subtraction and elapsed time) 5. Multiplication and division
6. Oregon Trail on the computer. Students were then divided into "families" to rotate through the stations. Each correct answer was worth a gold nugget. Harder questions were worth larger nuggets of gold. At the end, they had to come and weigh their gold in grams at the bank, and I paid out cash at the rate of $6 per gram. ( They had to figure out how much I owed them.) Today they are counting their money and deciding which supplies to buy for their trip west. It was a super fun, engaging way to review the standards, and I also learned that I need to reteach measuring to the nearest quarter inch, and we need to improve our skills with representing fractions on a number line! It's been a fun week of activities!

We had a great day! We practiced our cowboy skills by sorting little -oi -oy piggies using pink balloons and flyswatters. We made wanted posters. We enjoyed some mighty fine grub and practiced our square dancing skills. I think my favorite part was the awesome photo opportunities. Way to go, Carver Elementary!💜
