The quote said, "I am firm in my belief that a teacher lives on and on through his students.  Good teaching is is forever and the teacher is immortal."

I immediately thought it was a very powerful quote, but I wouldn't be able to fully appreciate the sentiment until I actually became a classroom teacher and got some experience under my belt.

Now, after sixteen years in the classroom, I can truly comprehend what Stuart said. I understand that my life is intertwined with the lives of my students. Their successes are my successes. Their heartache is my own. I continue living through them. It is a powerful bond and one I am grateful to have.  

Since that day in 2003 when I first saw the Jesse Stuart quote in Jenkins Hall, I have seen other Stuart quotes at various places in Kentucky. The most recent was at the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital.
