Today we went to the Memorial ACTe - the Caribbean Center of expressions and memory of slavery. It is incredible how cruel men could and can be to each other. We have to do everything to avoid this, to sensitizise our children and to make them strong for humanity.
Therefore it is even more admirable to see how people in Guadeloupe overcame their past and manage to live together in peace nowadays.

Our first classroom today was the market of Pointe-a-Pitre, which was really interesting. Our second classroom was the Memorial ACTe. To see the exhibits and read the information about slavery were difficult experiences. For centuries the lives of millions of black people had been destroyed, they had to give up everything, their freedom, their families, their culture and very often their lives. But even under these cruel circumstances the people of Guadeloupe, all of them liberated slaves, formed "nations" to unite each other and to create a new culture with a mixture of their different identities, religions, music and traditions that helped them to survive. What made me think positive was the end of the exhibition: the ten videos by Nicolas Merault, an artist living in Guadeloupe, showed this modern island as a very friendly, creative, tolerant and open-minded society.

I hope your self-study day was really useful - having read the suggested articles about the culture's tendency to be fluid and plural and looking around the market and later at the museum, you have come to some understanding that the culture, custom and tradition has no boundaries - it travels together with the people from one place to another changing and adapting to the geographical, political and social situation, at the same time changing and shaping personal identities.
I hope, that newly gained knowledge and understanding about the slavery will make you feel stronger working on international projects that make people more connected, more open-minded, more tolerant towards the differences while celebrating similarities.
I also hope that your French taster studies have been progressing little by little. Remember to take an opportunity to use some words and phrases you have acquired, ask local people for help with the pronunciation of the vocabulary on the list, add any other words and phrases that might be useful communicating with local people.

Today we've discovered and remembered so many things we've learned at school and in books, some of them quite forgotten. The visit to the museum has been a complete lesson of history of this part of the world. It has been a surprising journey that made me reflect on the terrible things that happened to millions of people treated as slaves after tearing them from their countries. The quote of today, or better said, the most awesome for me was the space dedicated to "the tree of forgetfulness", the symbolic tree where people had to go round and round to get rid of all their memories, emptiring them of their essence, what is the same as killing them. A terrible door was closed behind them and another one half opened in front of them. Let's go on opening all the doors and all the minds in the world; let's learn about differences and let's grow with them like a multicultural world.

The morning walk through the market of Pointe-La-Pitre inmersed me fully in the culture of diversity and different traditions of this fascinating island. I also had the opportunity to talk with local artisans who create art-works from wood, coconut tree leaves, etc....All of them were very nice, helpful and opened people.
Visit to the Memorial ACTe - the Caribbean Center of expressions and memory of slavery.

The Caribbean Centre for Expression and Remembrance of the Slave Trade is first and foremost a symbolic location, a mausoleum in homage to former slaves. But beyond its primary role of remembrance and contemplation, the Memorial ACTe plays a key role in understanding the modern world and its intercultural relations. It should help us overcome the greatest challenge of the 21st century: living together.

It is an experience at once emotional, sensory, and thought-provoking. We can learn about the history of Guadeloupe and the Caribbean, always in relation to the main history. The mechanisms of slavery are covered in full, from Antiquity to nowadays. Videos, sound effects, and interactive computers and tables assist in exploring the theme.

Today we visited the hustle and bustle of the local market. I loved seeing all the vibrant colours that were visible on every stall. We then had the opportunity to visit the memorial museum. This contemporary museum offered us a true portrait of the Carribean’s slave trade and indigenous people. This visit made it imperative to me that we still have a lot of work to do to prevent all of the human trafficking still going on today.

It was great to visit the market today and see how the people use their local resources to create items to sell. The museum visit was both educational and inspiring and has helped me to better understand the history and culture of Guadeloupe.

I will endeavour to connect more with the locals by using as much of their language as I can; asking for help with new vocabulary and pronunciation.
