“As I spent more time in the students’ communities, my social networks within the communities expanded, and I spent less time in the morning and after school planning sessions that used to take up most of my time. I was learning about the students and enjoying myself so much that I didn’t realize that I was still putting in the same amount of time into my new activities as I was into formally planning for my classes. The lessons about the students’ that I was learning were plentiful and I couldn’t soak them in quickly enough” (Emdin, p. 137). This picture shows a teacher actually getting down to play in the kitchen center with her students. This is a great way for this student to get to know her students on a more personal level. My fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Power, was very involved in the community of her students. I remember that she came to most of my softball games, to my birthday party, and any community event that the school held. In return, Mrs. Power built a bond with me that is still alive today. She is one of the only teachers that I have ever felt actually try to get to know me on a more personal level. I feel as though that is what Emdin was doing in the quote stated above. He stayed after school on a daily basis to play basketball with the students that stayed after school. In return, Emdin was able to get to know these students on a more personal level, and that built a relationship between him and his students. This allowed Emdin to learn valuable lessons about his students and make the classroom climate and environment one that is welcoming to all of his students because he got to know them on a personal level. This is important for all of us to note as future educators because we want to build a classroom that is welcoming and inviting to all students, and we want to be able to build those lasting relationships with all of our students. Emdin gave a great example of what we could do to get to know our students a little bit better. You don’t have to stay after school and play basketball, you can do other things that fit your students best, but it is important to find something that works for you and your students because it will change who you are as a teacher.

Quote: The facing of an opponent becomes a means to strengthen the physical, spiritual, and mental self and recognize that the battle is not with the person who stands in front of you but with life. (pg. 153)

We often times look at others as a competition for our lives. We think that those around us can sometimes be against us. Often times we are so concerned with our competition that we see around us that we forget to focus on the competition we have within ourselves. The quote became of significance because it supports the idea of strengthening yourself. In order for someone to show growth, they must be able to grow in multiple areas. When you have a good mental self, you can begin to show spiritual growth. As you begin to feel good, you will look good—physical strength. I have learned that in order to grow myself, I must understand why I am battling myself in becoming better. I am my biggest competition because I always want to continue to grow and become the best I can be in many ways. I think that we can grow in different area and each person has different strengths that are stronger than others. However, if I continue to try and show growth then I will be able to achieve whatever I feel may be possible. I think in order for one to grow, positivity must be important to that person. Life is never planned and we cannot predict what is going to happen. That is why life is our biggest competition. We are unsure of what may come next or how the expectations of our lives can change. The picture I chose is a great way to describe all of what life is about. It gives many different emotions we as people may feel when going through life. It explains how and what life is about and gives examples of things we many need in order to get through life. Some of the most important emotions are in larger print which brings attention to them. They all lead to the direction of living a positive life. I myself have felt many of these emotions in my life and in order for my to show growth, I had to make myself my competition and know that I can only get in the way of my own destiny. I think that if many people look at life that way and we as future teachers can get out students to think that way, then they will do their best to try and become all they an be. Students need to be reminded constantly that they can do or be anything they want to be but in order to do that, they must make themselves their competition—not other people. As a teacher, I want to encourage my students to give their full efforts in order to strengthen their physical, mental and spiritual self so they are able to fight the battle within themselves in order to achieve success.

"Graffiti is a way for the neoindigenous to dress up their neighborhoods in much the same way that clothing dresses up the body." p.167

In this video eL Seed talks about how he won't home to his old neighborhood. He had become know for his inspirational graffiti and was so happy that he was asked to do something in his neighborhood. He considers his graffiti art. It is a mixture of graffiti and calligraphy. When he does it, eL Seed isn't trying to destroy or vandalize, he is expressing himself. Like Emdin said, it is a way for them to express themselves or making their neighborhood just a little nicer. When kids wear their nice clothes to school , including hats and other things that may be asked to be removed, they are just wanting to express themselves in a fun manner.

"However , the incorporation of neoindigenous fashion along with the teacher's own style serves as a powerful jumping-off point for rich dialogue with youth that opens up the space for powerful teaching moments."

The picture I chose was of "Teacher Bae" This was a woman who dressed very fashionably. She got a lot of controversy because it was said her attire was too provocative. In my opinion she cannot help her shape. She wore clothes that fit her shape and were just what her age group wore. I had a teacher in high school who also dressed very fashionably. The boys did love to go to her class and everyone had a little crush on her but they also knew their physical science. She was fun and spunky and relatable. I plan on being a very fashionable teacher as well. I don't think teachers have to dress doughty or out of style. I plan on continuing to express myself through style just like I always have.

"I argue for an authentic code switching that involves valuing oneself in one's culture while appreciating and understanding the codes of other cultures."

This quote comes from chapter ten, code switching in which Emdin describes his concept of a hybridized identity. He believes that in order for one to be truly authentic, they must be able to fluidly switch codes throughout multiple spaces while creating new codes that embrace multiple cultures. The key there is embracing multiple cultures when creating these new codes. Appreciating and comprehending other cultures will benefit one’s developing hybrid identity. This idea of hybridized identity is defined as “where an individual can embrace and express many cultures with their multiple codes seamlessly and simultaneously.” Emdin has stated that navigating multiple spaces is just one example of how students develop their hybridized identity. I think this video goes along perfectly with the quote chosen because it exemplifies what code switching looks like.
