The Battle of Vimy Ridge was one of the many battles during World War I. After the failure of France, as well as Britain to conquer Vimy Ridge, it was up to Canada. Canada used maneuvers such as the creeping barrage to successfully pull through, and defeated Germany, in turn conquering Vimy Ridge. This was Canada's first solo victory in a battle, proving how Canada could be successfully independent in its growing autonomy.

This battle is incredibly significant throughout Canadian history as it is often recognized as Canada's first major solo victory, at a time when their exponentially growing autonomy was rapidly developing. This battle was incredibly influential and helped shape Canada into the nation it is today.

I believe this battle was very influential for the development of Canada's growing autonomy, and Canada as a nation. The battle of Vimy Ridge proved that Canada could function as an independent nation, and not just as a colony of The British Empire. This battle has had a lasting impact on Canadians, and Canada as a whole, and gives Canadians something to look back and be proud of from WWI.

Following the failure of the League of Nations, countries such as Canada, Britain, and the US were determined to make a lasting alliance that would make a lasting impact. The catastrophic World War II was an experience that proved alliances are in the best interest of all nations. These nations learned from their previous failures within the league of nations and applied their knowledge to an entirely new league, which would be the strongest at the time. With a total of 12 countries joining at the signing of their new alliance labeled NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation), these nations were now a force to be reckoned with.

This event is significant as the forming of NATO paid off, and no nuclear warfare took place between the Soviet Union and NATO countries. The tension between countries such as the US and the Soviet Union was very high at the time, and nuclear warfare may have occurred if NATO was not created.

I believe the signing of NATO Provided a sense of relief and safety for all members and provided a sense that nobody in the alliance would be alone if they were to be invaded. NATO was signed at the beginning of the Cold War, a time were nuclear threats, and WWIII was not too far in the distance. The purpose of NATO was to intimidate and conspire against the Soviet Union, and show them that if they fight one of the NATO countries, they were fighting all of the NATO countries. This intimidation technique was successful as no nuclear combat occurred between NATO countries and the Soviet Union.

The Japanese Invasion of Manchuria/China -1937-1945

Japan's invasion of China in the midst of WWII was one of the most embarrassing, Merciless events known to man. The inhumane things Japan did to China during this invasion are unspeakable. Japanese belief in racial superiority fuelled this disgusting sequence of events. The Japanese soldiers would partake in kidnappings, killing civilians, killing prisoners of war, assaulting Chinese women, and stealing Chinese belongings. The invasion of Manchuria, and the rest of China is things nobody should have to witness or partake in within their lifetime.

This event is significant to the time period as it perfectly displays how much racism was around during this time period, and what countries believed in. This event encapsulates what the Japanese believed in, as well as the lengths they were willing to go to achieve their goals. The projection of the Japanese mindset displayed throughout these savage acts gave the US even more justification to halt the Japanese fight-or-die-trying mentality with nuclear bombs to prevent even more inhumane things committed by the Japanese, as well as aggression toward the US.

I believe this event is important to remember when speaking about The Second World War, to show how much racism, and belief of racial superiority there was around, with all nations partaking in it. The extreme views on racial superiority fuelled many extreme nationalistic governments throughout this time period, participating in battles to prove their people were better than the opposition, especially Japan.

The Assassination of Franz Ferdinand -1914

The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was the Spark of the first world war. During his tour of Sarajevo Bosnia on June 28th, 1914, Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was trying to win over the civilians of a region that was not in favor of the Habsburg monarchy currently in charge of their state. When news of this tour was heard in Serbia, the Serbian nationalist organization The Black Hand crafted a plan to Assassinate the Archduke on tour. In a historically strange turn of events, with a failed assassination attempt already, the vehicle transporting the Archduke was headed right toward his soon-to-be murderer, Gavrilo Princip who successfully carried through with the assassination and in turn, changed the course of history.

This event was very significant as it was the spark that lit the flame for the first world war. This assassination caused all the alliances at this time period to come into full effect. Germany and Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia involved Russia and the allies in immediate war. It is often speculated that if this event did not occur, WWI may not have begun, but there is no evidence to support this claim.

I believe even without the assassination of Franz Ferdinand taking place, war was bound to begin in Europe in 1914. The tensions between nations such as Britain and Germany, and the massive naval arms race occurring between both those nations created severe tensions that could not be overlooked. Each nation was trying to intimidate with military might, and nationalism fueling each move made.

Wall Street Crash -1929

Following the First World War, the economy began to boom. All throughout the "roaring twenties" the economy was skyrocketing to never before seen peaks, and new inventions made life better for everyone. All the rapidly developing economy came crashing down in 1929 when the stock market began to crash, putting the banks out of business. The Wall Street crash prevented the US to continue to send money to Germany under the Dawes plan. This made the German economy even worse than it had already been from their hyperinflation and made the Reichsmark practically worthless.

This event is significant as the German people were living in awful conditions, and trying to survive in a failing nation. Seeking a way to fix their problem, they turn to Adolf Hitler, a man promising to rebuild Germany to its former glory and reconstruct the German economy. The desperation of Germans to go back to their old lives and forget about the economic depression plaguing their nation caused the introduction of a radical fascist leader, that would eventually start WWII.

I believe the Wall Street crash was one of the most significant events of the 20th century. The Wall Street crash showed that the economy will not always be booming and that people should be more conservative with their money. Without the Wall Street crash, if the Dawes plan continued to function, who knows if WWII would have taken place and if the German economy may have miraculously rebuilt.

In 1929, a group labeled the Famous Five attempted to get a job in the senate, but soon discovered a major flaw in the Canadian constitution, a bill that stated that women are not considered people. After finding this information out, Nellie McClung, and the rest of the Famous Five fought for women's rights for them to be seen as people. After loads of effort by the Famous Five, a decision made by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council made women people under the Canadian constitution.

I believe this event is very significant as it shows just how unfair these old times used to be, and the lengths people had to go to fight for equality. Without the Famous Five fighting for women to be labelled people in the Canadian constitution, who knows where womens rights would be today. This groups determination for equality resulted in one of the most significant events in Canadian history.

I believe that a women should be labelled a person as equally as a man is labelled a person, it is absurd to think otherwise. At the birth of Canada, to think this crazy thought was flowing through the British Empire's mind will never fail to blow my mind. I am glad that the bravery of Nellie McClung and the Famous Five made this massive difference in Canada and fought until women were considered people.

Chinese Head Tax -1885-1923

From the late 19th century, and into the 20th century, Chinese immigration to Canada was rapidly increasing. With the increasingly growing population on Canada's west coast, the idea was spread that they were taking jobs from white people. The Canadian government's solution to this "problem" was implementing a "head tax" on each Chinese citizen migrating to Canada. At the beginning of this legislation, each Chinese civilian would need to pay a $50 fee to begin their life in Canada. As time went on, this Fee gradually increased all the way to $500.

This is significant as the Chinese laborers coming to Canada had loads of opportunities to work in the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway prior to 1885, but after the construction was complete, Canada no longer needed Chinese laborers. The purpose of imposing the Chinese head tax was to eliminate Chinese immigration into Canada, but this tax would not slow immigration as Chinese citizens kept arriving on the west coast of Canada in search of labor and a better life.

I believe the Chinese citizens wanting to migrate to Canada were very unfairly treated, as only Chinese immigrants had to pay this tax upon entry into Canada. Chinese citizens should have received the same treatment as each and every other individual seeking labor in Canada, but due to an extremely racist population and time period, this was not the case.

The Discovery of Insulin -1921

Up until 1921, diabetes was an incurable disease that would most likely result in death, as no cure was found. In 1921, a team of four doctors from the University of Toronto discovered Insulin, a drug that stimulates glucose levels in the patient's bloodstream, temporarily lowering blood sugar levels. The discovery of insulin provided hope for all suffering from diabetes that they can happily live the rest of their lives to the fullest.

This miraculous event is significant as this invention over 100 years ago is still being practiced today by doctors for diabetics. Insulin has saved countless amounts of lives and is one of the most famous and important things to derive from Canadians. Without the discovery of insulin, untreated diabetes would lead to an unprecedented amount of deaths in today's society.

I believe the discovery of insulin is the most important thing Canada has accomplished throughout its history. The number of lives it has saved is miraculous. From diabetes being one of the top lead causes of death to significantly dropping after the discovery of insulin, goes to show just how influential and important this discovery was for the world.

The Cold War was a time period following World War II when nuclear war and World War III was not too far on the horizon. The two nations responsible for the Cold War were the United States and the Soviet Union. These two countries were not seeing eye to eye due to polar opposite political ideologies, and each nation attempting to become the strongest nation in the world. This conflict eventually grew to unexplainable heights with the threat of atomic weapons destroying the opposing nation throughout this 46-year-long conflict. The Cold War came to an abrupt stop in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet Union, and nuclear control agreements.

The Cold war was the cause of the creation of the Warsaw pact, and more importantly, NATO, to try to stop the Soviet Union from partaking in nuclear warfare. The Cold War also forced the United States and the Soviet Union to have massive defense budgets, heavy modernization, and maintenance of foreign military bases. These two superpowers nearly led to the brink of nuclear warfare during the Cuban missile crisis, when Soviet missiles stationed in Cuba were directly aimed at the United States, and if the missiles had not moved, nuclear warfare would have broken out between these nations.

I believe it was a miracle no nuclear warfare took place in this time period. The tensions between The United States and the Soviet Union were reaching the point nuclear warfare could have easily occurred. The Cold War proved just how desperate nations such as the United states were for power, and the lengths they were willing to go to achieve it.

Canada's Involvement in the Korean War -1950-1953

The Korean war was fought between the communist dictatorship of North Korea and democratic South Korea. North Korean leader Kim Il-Sung believed the only way to reunification, was a battle under Soviet control, against American-controlled South Korea. Canada's involvement in this battle significantly helped South Korea. 26000 Canadian soldiers were stationed to fight in the Korean war, with air, sea, and land support. The Canadian soldiers made the ultimate difference in the battle of Kapyong Valley when they help with what would have been a devastating defeat for South Korean, and UN soldiers. The soldiers of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry were able to hold North Korean soldiers out for 3 days, ultimately helping launch an offensive attack.

Canadian involvement in the Korean war was very influential and was one of the many reasons South Korea pulled through inbattl the war. The 26000 Canadians fighting in the Korean war fought until their side won. Canada's determination in the battle of Kapyong Valley to hold off the North Koreans created the ultimate counter-push that turned into a complete offensive from the South Koreans against the North Koreans, fully swinging the momentum in the South Korean's favor. This battle is similar to the battle of Vimy Ridge, as a solo Canadian victory significantly boosted troop morale, and will go down in the record books as one of Canada's best victories.

I believe that Canada's involvement in the Korean war was crucial to its success. Canada's morale, and help with the war at sea, on land, and in the air, heavily influenced the final outcome of this war. Canada's participation in the battle of Hill 355, and Kapyong Valley were just some of the major achievements Canada accomplished throughout the Korean war.
