Frederick Douglass was born a slave and escaped at age 20. He went on to became one of america's most influential African-American writers and orators. His impact however reaches far beyond himself, he was an example of someone born into slavery yet was able to become an intelligent writer and speaker. His abolitionist messages took on a different tone due to his color and helped inspire many other African-Americans. He was able to show that African-Americans were not genetically pre-disposed to be less intelligent than whites.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and was the first Republican president. He is known for the emancipation proclamation as well as leading the United States through its bloodiest war since its creation, the civil war. He is one of the most impactful presidents of the United States because he was the president who ended the horrors of slavery and brought the union together. The freeing of the slaves finally gave black people a chance in the United States, even if it wasn't a good one, to make a life for themselves and their families. Ending slavery opened the door for more African-Americans to show that they were not subordinate to whites and are just a deserving of rights.

Underground railroad

The underground railroad was a network of routes and road on which escaped slaves could navigate, with the help of abolitionists, their way to the free north or Canada. By 1850 over 100,000 slaves had escaped via the underground railroad. The underground railroad had an incredible impact on southern slaves because it gave them a chance to escape if they were brave enough. It not only helped slaves escape their bondage but it also showed how deeply abolitionists believed in what they were doing. Many abolitionists were willing to risk their lives, some even gave them, in order to do what they felt was right.

Bleeding Kansas

Bleeding Kansas is a term used to refer to the fighting and violence that occurred in Kansas during the 1850s and 60s. This violence was caused by the popular sovereignty rule put in Kansas which meant both ant-slavery and pro-slavery supporters wanted the vote to go their way. This period showcases how big of an issue slavery was at this time as many people were willing to give their lives to spread it or stop it. This also shows the "uncivilized" nature of the west as many of the western territories were un-regulated.

The Liberator

The liberator was an abolitionist newspaper that was founded in 1831 by William Lloyd Garrison and Isacc Napp. It ran continuously for 30 and was nationaly recognized. The liberator had a large impact by spreading the message of abolitionism around the country and encountered strong resistance from the south. It also gave opportunities for black columnists and writers to share their opinions and give people a chance to hear the black voice. The south's reaction to the liberator also shows how controlling the south was of the media when it came to anti-slavery messages.

The Wilmot Proviso

The Wilmot proviso was a bill put forth by David Wilmot to stop the spreading of slavery into the territories acquired from mexico. The bill passed in the house but failed in the senate where the south had more representation. This bill, while it was not put into place, is a symbol of the growing anti-slavery movement. This shows that the abolitionist cause is in the United States government and poses a large threat to the south. For many in the south the Wilmot Proviso made them distrust the U.S. government and only further encouraged sectionalism rather than nationalism.
