Hi, I’m Kelcee Drake. I am currently in the Professional School Counseling program. This is finally my last semester…yay!!! I see the light!! My career plans/goals is just what I am doing now. I am in my 2nd year of being a school counselor. I absolutely love it! I am married going on 21 years. We have 4 kids ( 2 girls, 2 boys) they range in ages of 20, 18,13, and 7. We live in a small rural area where we have farm animals, they are my stress relief! My favorite is Daisy Donkey, she loves to greet us in the morning and when I get home in the afternoon. You can’t be grumpy when a donkey talks to you.

One goal I have for this course is to just learn more about trauma and its effects on us as adults and children. I feel like this is something that you can’t ever know too much about.

This assignment was a hard on for me. I don't really like to watch shows about children getting hurt/killed. It really hurts my heart. I watched this and I can say it made me angry, and it helped me realize what some of the signs are that might not be noticeable to everyone. It also reassured me that when you see something say something even if it turns out to be nothing. You never know whose voice you are being when you speak up.

I love that I can help navigate them in the right direction. This just give me extra tools in the tool belt to use.

Bullying is such a hot topic among kids and some parents. This just helped me in knowing what I can tell parents/ kids when they think or are being bullied by others. I like how we had to list some contact info in the assignment, that can be useful when/if I need to look up some extra help.

The ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors (2022) provide a framework for ethical decision-making in school counseling. One of the most relevant codes is A.2. Confidentiality, which emphasizes the importance of protecting students' privacy while balancing the need for disclosure in situations involving harm to self or others, abuse, or legal requirements.

This code is directly connected to my professional role as a school counselor because it guides how I handle sensitive student information, build trust, and ensure student safety. Confidentiality is essential for creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable seeking help. However, the ethical obligation to break confidentiality when there is a risk of harm ensures that I fulfill my duty as a mandated reporter and advocate for student well-being. Understanding and adhering to this standard is critical for maintaining professional integrity and providing ethical, effective support to students.

Cultural Competence Reflection

Cultural competence is essential in delivering responsive services as a school counselor because it ensures that all students feel valued, understood, and supported. Schools are diverse environments where students come from various racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and linguistic backgrounds, each with unique experiences and challenges. By being culturally competent, I can recognize and address biases, adapt interventions to meet students’ individual needs, and foster an inclusive environment that promotes equity and respect.

Understanding cultural differences allows me to provide more effective support by considering how a student’s background influences their mental health, behavior, and academic performance. It also strengthens my ability to build trust with students and their families, ensuring they feel safe seeking help. Culturally responsive counseling involves continuous learning, self-awareness, and advocacy to challenge systemic barriers that may impact marginalized students. By committing to cultural competence, I can better serve diverse populations and promote an inclusive school climate where all students have the opportunity to succeed.
