With reference to the 2 news articles, explain the fall in prices of coffee beans in Brazil.

Jiajun:

To begin with, the prices of coffee beans in Brazil is determined by the forces of demand & supply. Demand refers to the amount of coffee beans consumers are willing and able to purchase in a given time period at various prices. Supply refers to the amount of coffee beans producers are willing and able to produce and sell for at various prices in a given time period

One of the factors leading to a decrease in the prices of coffee beans is the increase in supply of coffee beans. This can be seen from "reason is that production of coffee, and of cheaper robusta beans in particular, is booming. Vietnam has gone from growing almost nothing a decade ago to producing 25m bags of robusta beans a year today. The result is an oversupply of coffee." The "oversupply" of coffee beans leads to a leftward shift in the supply curve, ceteris paribus. Assuming that demand curve remains constant, this would cause the price of coffee beans to fall.

Another factor accounting for the fall in prices of coffee beans is the decrease in demand for coffee beans due to a recession in Europe. A recession leads to a decrease in the income of consumers. With a decreased income, consumers have a smaller purchasing power and as such, they'll be less willing and able to consume coffee for the same given price, causing a decrease in demand for coffee and thus, a leftward shift in the demand curve, ceteris paribus.

The rightward shift in the supply curve and the leftward shift in the demand curve leads to a downward pressure on price as there will be excess supply if prices were to remain at the same initial equillibrium.

From, enter your name, then you can use the "sticky note" to "chat" with each other.

For example, Miss Lee: I don't think that is a non-price factor that affects demand. Please remember to write your name before the statement :)

Lastly, please identify these non-price determinants of demand & supply by quoting the relevant phrases from the article.

For example, as stated in article 1, "the recession in Europe has hit demand". After quoting the evidence for the article please proceed to explain how this non-price factor affects demand or supply with economic rigour.

I have provided some scaffolding statements to guide you in your essay development.

Evangeline:
(Demand) The European recession affects the demand. The income of consumers decreases, thus leading to a decrease in purchasing power. In certain countries, coffee beans are also considered as a luxury good. Therefore, it is not a necessity and thus demand for coffee beans decreases. Therefore, the supply curve shifts leftwards from D1 to D2, ceteris paribus.

Jacelyn:
(Supply) Cost of production for coffee beans is rising as it is a labour intensive crop. Wages in Brazil and Colombia are rising fast and production costs are above prices. Assuming the budget remains the same, producers of coffee beans can produce lesser coffee beans as compared to before. This would cause a fall in profits resulting in the decrease of supply of coffee beans Therefore, the supply curve shifts rightwards from S1 to S2, ceteris paribus.

Sheryl:
(Supply)
Good weather, better husbandry, more fertiliser in Brazil means that this year's crop has turned out to be unexpectedly large. This will cause more crops to be produce in the year. This will increase the supply of coffee beans. Therefore the supply curve shifts rightwards from S1 to S2,ceteris paribus.
