This unit will explore the various types of environments and their ecosystems. It is vital that students gain an understanding and appreciation for the vast diversity among environments. As the current student will be facing immense ecosystem/environment shifts and changes during their lifetime. Students will learn about diverse environments such as deserts, tropical rain forests, and mountains. Students will explore the ways organisms of an ecosystem interact and coexist through observation, discussion, and text-based research. Students will understand and be able to explain how all life on Earth is supported by the sun. Students will understand the concept of food chains and will be able to identify different roles within food chains such as producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, and de-composers (3.RI.4). Students will use models and illustrations to further their understanding of plant life cycles and food chains (3.RI.7). Students will demonstrate their knowledge of natural selection by identifying characteristics of various organisms that have the potential to change over the course of multiple generations and how these characteristics aid in the organism’s survival (3-LS3-1, 3-LS3-2).
