Hilda signed up to be a nurse in the German army. That's what she believes is necessary with her husband and brother in the war. Also she wants to know right away about their health. She has family in Japan; which is one country they are fighting. She hopes to get letters from them, informing her of the war from their perspective and how they are health wise and physical wise. No one really knows that she still hopefully getting these letters during the war. If the government finds out that would be bad for her. She will be kicked out and will not get informed on her families health.

Hilda an 24 year old women. Living and working on her fathers farm with her husband and kids in Germany, Schlesinger-Holstein. Hilda's family is a middle class family. Which is average for a family in this time period. The only thing keeping them from being poor is selling crops and making profit from it. They work so hard that they forget to think of themselves as feeding themselves. She has no rights sense she was a woman in the 1900s.

Hilda is a nurse in the war. She had seen really brutal sights, such as chunks of heads cut off, blood everywhere, arms and legs separated from the body, eyeballs missing, holes in the body, bullets inside the body, and arms and legs dislocated. One normal day of getting people every minute. She sees her husband come in the room and sees that he has a trench foot with bones sticking out and bite marks of rats. Due to this his leg needs to be cut off. A few weeks later he does end up dying from an infection in his leg. Later in the war Hilda herds that her brother has past away from a plane crash and was burned alive from no one near or with to save him. After all of these terrible events Hilda is second guessing ever signing up to work as a nurse in the war. Seeing all of these things happen brings her sick and does not know how she will ever forget all of this and go back home and live a normal life. That is if she makes it home without dying like her brother and husband.

War is over she comes home with no husband or brother. Her husband has died from really bad trench foot. SO bad he ha to get it cut off. Later in the war her brother is killed in a horrific plane crash. After Hilda comes home she gets to see her two kids and her father. Telling them all that has happened during the war and wishes and prays that something like this will never happen again. With a bad feeling in her gut, she regrets ever going into the war to work as a nurse. She feels like she had let everyone down. Then she realizes that if she didn't go in and work as a nurse she would have never known when her husband and brother died. Also being there when her husband dies was something not every loved one can do. Wishing she could have been with her brother on his passing sense he was there for her for everything that she did. After all the grief that she has from the deaths she does end up committing suicide due to PTSD and Depression. Leaving her two kids with their grandpa to help him with the farm.

Hilda has deep thoughts in World War 1. With her husband and her brother both killed during this terrifying event. She also has family in Japan; people we are fighting against. Hilda gets letters from them during the war. Telling her about the things that they are going through at the time. If the government ever found out what she was up to and that she was getting information from their enemies she would get in deep trouble; with having her get fired from her job and never seeing or hearing about her husband and brothers health and/or possibly killed from it. Having herself know about what they are going through made her feel same inside because she is scared of the unknown. Her other family in Japan are going through a lot and she doesn't like the feeling of thinking she might lose them as well. Japan has a lot of power and Hilda is scared that they might lose their farm land from the war because they might lose. She doesn't really like wars because everyone is at risk on every move the government makes; but its life we are going to have wars every once in a while.
