Marie Curie nació en Varsovia (Polonia) el 7 de noviembre de 1867 y murió en Passy (Francia) el 4 de julio de 1934. Nacida como Maria Salomea Sklodowska, Marie Curie es conocida por ser la primera mujer científica en recibir el Premio Nobel y ser la primera catedrática de la Universidad de la Sorbona de París.
Tuvo que desafiar a las convenciones de todo un país -Polonia- para poder dedicarse a investigar -en sus tiempos, las mujeres no podían ir a la Universidad-. Despuntó tanto en sus investigaciones sobre radiación que fue la primera mujer en ganar el Premio Nobel en Física en 1903 y en 1911 el Premio Nobel en Química. 
El Premio Nobel de Química 1911 fue otorgado a Marie Curie: “En reconocimiento a sus servicios para el avance de la Química al descubrir los elementos radio y polonio, por medio del aislamiento del radio y el estudio de la naturaleza y los componentes de este sorprendente elemento”.
