3.  Hawaii residents pay one of the highest income tax rates in the country (8.5%-11% depending on income). However, they pay much less in property taxes (though because of the expense and leasehold property, fewer Hawaii residents own land than other states). Different types of taxes go for different types of services for citizens. Usually state income taxes go to fund infrastructure like roads, public services like hospitals, and benefits to retired and disabled persons. Property taxes usually go to schools.
