Robert Koch was the first one to connect the specific bacterium with specific disease - anthrax. He's experiments and discoveries started a new 'golden age' in bacteriology.
'Koch was appointed district medical officer. While maintaining his clinical practice, he began investigating a major health problem—anthrax. (...)'
He started his experiments with animals, which led him to a hypothesis that the rod-shaped structures found in diseased animals' blood, spleen and lymph nodes were actually living bacteria. ' He developed extraordinarily refined techniques of microscopy. By placing a piece of infected splenic tissue in a drop of aqueous humor and sealing it on a concave slide, he created a ‘living’ environment that allowed him to observe bacterial growth over days.' His discovery explained how bacteria could survive the harsh conditions and led to his recommendation of burning diseased animals' bodies or burrying them in the soil cold enough to destroy the bacteria, which could prevent the spread of disease. His work was published in 1876 in Ferdinand Cohn's botanic journal and brought fame to Koch's name.
