Preparing for Unit 5-6

For the first lesson of unit 5-6 we looked at multiple children books, he reason for this could've been for inspiration/ideas and so we could see how to appeal to the target audience. In another lesson we were shown how to do voice recordings, by this I mean we were shown the best way to project our voices and the best position to have the mic to optimise the quality of the sound. When we were shown how to record audio we were set the task of finding a script and recording our own voices, my group chose to do part of the Toy Story script, the main purpose of this task was to play around with our voices and find out who we wanted to voice our character for our E-books. When we had recorded the voices we were set with the task of dubbing our voices to the chosen film (so my group did it to toy story) it didn't take long but we had practice dubbing our voice to an animation. Another thing we was shown was the importance of background music, we were shown multiple clips where the background music added to the scene, we were then shown an app called "Garage Band", this is an app where I could make my own background music that washy copyrighted, its very easy to use and I'll most likely use it when making my E-book.

Something else we had to do before starting to make our E-books was research, the first bit of research that we did was primary research, we did this by going out to the public and we interviewed people about what types of books they read when they were a child, by asking this we got an understanding about what type of book is most popular and that could influence our choice in what genre our E-books would be. Other questions we asked the public were about the colour scheme, font/text and other questions similar to that which would help us when making our E-books. We also had to do secondary research, we did this by going to the public library and took pictures of the covers of book and some of the pages, the reason for the was we could analyse the books and see why they're successful, things I had to look at was the style of the books, the story and the message and things like that.

Pre-prodcution for Unit 5-6

On the first day of pre-production we were put into groups of two, on the day though my partner wasn't in so I thought that I wouldn't be able to do anything but on this day I wrote up a mind map about what I wanted the E-book to be about and any other ideas I had about it, when I was doing this I messaged my partner that wasn't in an told him about my ideas and checked to see if he agreed with them, my initial plan was o have a story about a prince that was gay because there aren't too many Stories about a prince thats gay, this also made the message of the E-book equality, the reason why I thought this was a good idea was because to exposes children of a young age and shows them that its okay to be different.

The following week when my partner was in we started the script, this took about two days because we had to consider what our audience would enjoy and how to deal with the story because the story was about a gay prince it would be easy to offend people so we had to be careful with that. When we was writing the script we had to consider who we wanted to voice the characters and how we wanted the characters to look, we had already agreed a style (simple looking characters because it would be easier to draw and animate).

Something that we started to do and wanted to do throughout the whole unit was minute meetings, the purpose of them was to establish our task for the day and talk about general things about the unit and write it down. Something else that we had to do was a podcast at the end of everyday, this was to talk about what we had done in the day and how we would deal with things, an example of this is if I had a problem a with the animating then I would talk about it in the podcast and say how I dealt with the problem. I preferred to do the podcast over a diary log because it didn't take as long and it was easier to do.

Production for Unit 5-6

On the first day of production me and my partner decided what we wanted to do that day and that was start making the backgrounds and characters. I started making the characters and he started doing the background, I used illustrator to make the outline of the characters then I would go into photoshop to colour them and make small changes, before this task I had never used illustrator so my partner showed me the basics and by the end of it I considered myself to be fairly good at it (something I found funny was that you could see my progression so the first character I made was obvious because it wasn't the best but the last ones I did were much more detailed, the problem with this was some of the characters looked out of place so if I was to do it all again I would make all the characters look as good as each other). It took about 2 weeks to do all the characters and backgrounds, in total I think there was about 6 backgrounds and they took about half a day each and there was around 1 characters and they took about 2 hours each but I kept going back to them to make alter them so they looked better.

When we had finished drawing the backgrounds my partner started to do the animation for the first scene and I got people to do the voice acting. In the first session of recording I got one of my friends Hazel to do the voices of some of the princesses and I did the voice of the main character (something I had to focus on was making the quality the best I could make it, one thing that annoyed me was the room we were in had some background noise so I found another room with less noise and less echo). When I had the first recordings I helped my partner animate a scene and we put the audio in and dubbed the voices. Something else I did was get one of my friends (Elliott) to come in and do the voice for the narrator, the reason I chose to get him to voice it was because he speaks very fluently and he projects his voice so I thought he would be a good fit so I spent an entire day getting him to do that and putting it into the animation.

The last week was mostly animating and editing audio and general stuff like that. One thing that I messed up on was I lost the recordings for Elliott's narration so I had to get him in the following week to do it again but they were better quality the second time so I'm glad about that.

Evaluation/Feedback or Unit 5-6

On the last day of the unit we presented our animations to the other classes, I was nervous before but the reception was entirely positive so I was glad about that although it did make it difficult to write an evaluation due to the lack of criticism. The only thing that could possibly be classed as criticism was someone said that maybe children that were younger shouldn't be exposed at such a young age to the whole gay thing but I dismissed that as criticism because that was the whole point of the E-book. Some of the positive feedback was about how they thought it was good to expose children of a young age to accept people that are different so it completely contradicted the criticism. Something else people liked was that we were very diverse in our characters, this was because we tried to have our characters be different races, this added to the whole equality message we were going for.

Overall I was happy with the final result, the message that I wanted to send I considered a success and we added a comedic aspect and when we showed our audience they laughed at that so I considered that a success too. If I had to change one thing it would be the characters, this is because some of them looked different to the others because when I firsts started I had never used Illustrator before but we didn't have enough time for me to go back and change the characters that I did at the beginning.
