Cornelius Vanderbilt was one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in American history. His vast influence touched every aspect of society. While he earned his wealth through destroying other business and was considered cunning and combative, he was also known by his contemporaries to be honorable and hard working, as he built such an empire from scratch. He was born into the transportation business. His father owned a ferry boat in New York, and he soon joined the transportation business and transformed it into something unforeseen. He had a vast network of railroads built across the nation, and built what has become Grand Central Terminal, what was the second largest train station in the world. Unlike many of his contemporary tycoons like Rockefeller and Carnegie, Vanderbilt did not own large, lavish mansions. The mansions built the the Vanderbilts were built by his descendants, not him. Nor did he make any charitable donations, except giving a million dollars to build Vanderbilt University.
