It is part of the Cultural Heritage of Montreal. If the mayor destroyed it, there would be protesters and she doesn't want that! Perhaps this pretty stone house is also part of his family heritage? Ms. Plante is of French Quebec origin after all.

However, we can also argue that this site is also part of the national heritage because French Quebecers consider themselves a nation in their own right. The Robert-Bélanger House is an excellent example of this unique character because its architecture is very different from the English buildings of the time.

1. History: The house is more than 300 years old. 

2. Cultural: Its presence allows future generations not to forget their roots. 

3. Unique: It is one of the first houses on the Montreal shore and constitutes one of the last witnesses of the agricultural vocation of this part of the island of Montreal before its urbanization.

4. Aesthetics and architecture: The residence is representative of the stone farm houses built at the beginning of the 19th century on the island of Montreal. These generally have a rectangular plan, a low clearance from the ground, a gable roof whose eaves can overhang as well as a chimney on each of the gables. These buildings often have four openings on the facade, i.e. three windows and a door. The main body of the Robert-Bélanger house brings together these main characteristics.

It was built almost 300 years ago, making it a historic site in Montreal. It is one of the oldest buildings in the entire Saint-Laurent. 

The Robert-Bélanger house is also of heritage interest for its ethnological value. The residence brings traditions of transmission of family heritage, notably donations. These were used in the reconstruction of this site. 

Why is this building considered historic... because it has survived 300 years. This means several historical events.

Elle est l'une des premières résidences à avoir été contruite près des rives du fleuve St-Laurent à Montréal. Sa présence permet aux futures générations de ne pas oublier leurs racines et de s'encrer dans leur communauté. Aussi, elle permet la transmission des valeurs culturelles d'une génération à l'autre.

Le bâtiment reste pratiquement inchangé sans l'ajout de la sacristie(Salle attenante à une église, où sont rangés les vases sacrés, les ornements sacerdotaux, les objets nécessaires au culte)en 1900. Sur le même site triangulaire que l'église se trouvent le Kirk Hall, érigé pour la première fois en 1829 en tant qu'école protestante qui est restée une institution scolaire florissante pendant de nombreuses années.
