Kenya has a plan to beat up a girl she doesn't like. Starr smells a distinct smell cannabis and the taste of punch that has way too much liquor.  Starr and Khalil find each other at the party. Kenya starts her advance on the girl but before she can carry it out, shots ring out. Everyone flees from the party. Khalil takes Starr to his vehicle and drives away. They get stopped by a cop.
Chapter 2
Khalil and Starr get pulled over by officer One-Fifteen. After checking for license and registration, he ask Khalil to get out of the car for being such a "smart guy". The officer pats down Khalil and tells him to stay where he is to get something from his vehicle. Khalil ignores his orders and heads back to his car. Three shots ring out and Starr see Khalil on the floor, slowly dying.

These chapters made me sad. Maverick explains how Starr got her name. A few days after the shooting, Starr and her parents visit Mrs. Rosalie, Khalil's grandma to pay their respects. Starr is bombarded with her memories of Khalil.

Starr punches Hailey and a fught ensues. Hailey’s older brother, Remy jumps in and Seven defends his younger sister from him. Starr and Seven are not expelled given what Starr has been through with the Khalil situation. King Lord’s and GD’s gather in the Carter’s living room and seem to be getting along.

The riot hits it’s peak and rioters smash the windows of nearby McDonalds and burn it to the ground. Starr thinks about her father’s store and is scared for it and the memories it holds. Officers arrive and tell the protesters to disperse. Someone throws a molotov cocktail and the group runs back to Seven’s car. He notes that he did it to Iesha once and broke her ribs. They hear police officers telling people to get off the roofs of cars. They realize thay have reached the place of the incident. People are repeating the phrase “A hairbrush is not a gun”. Starr them sees April Ofrah leading the chants with a bullhorn. Eventually, the group joins in on the chanting. Ms. Ofrah spots Starr and tells her, “Your voice is your most powerful weapon.” Ms. Ofrah has Starr fire her. Ms. Offah then gubes Starr the bullhorn and leads her to the front of the crowd. Starr gets on top of the police car and tells the crowd that she is the one who saw what happened to Khalil. Police throw tear gas into the crowd. Starr throws it right back at the officers which causes more chaos. Starr finds the boys and they see a grey pickup truck heading towards them. They realize that the person in the truck is Goon. He tells the group to get into the back of the truck. Starr notices that there are a lot of other people in the back of the truck, including a reporter. Goon drives to Maverick’s store and gives everyone milk to help stop the effects of the tear gas. Goon and the others leave, only leaving the group in the store. Starr opens her phone to see tons of worried and angry voicemails from her mother. Maverick arrives just in time and opens the back door. Everyone gets out of the store and neighbors show up with buckets of water to help put out the fire. King pulls up in a grey BMW. Him and his fellow King Lords point and laugh at the store up in flames. Maverick screams at King for starting and King just laughs at him as a response. Mr. Lewis shouts that King burnt down the store. The police officers and fire department arrive soon after. The officers tell everyone to back up. Mr. Lewis says they should arresting King because he started the fire. Much to Starr’s surprise, Maverick confirms Mr. Lewis’s story. Many i  the crowd then join in to confirm the story. An ambulance arrives and helps the group. Maverick accepts Chris as Starr’s boyfriend.The police arrest King and his King Lords. Remembering her mother’s advice, Starr weighs the good and the bad. The bad ultimately outweighed the good in the relationship and she cuts Hailey out of her life and deletes her number. Starr walks out of her room and says she has to get used to the new house. Lisa points out that the media has shown the picture of Starr throwing the tear gas back at the officers. Garden Heights is filled with trash and broken gas from the riots.
