SPM?

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Dear Dr. Joe,
May these questions reaches you in the best of health.

I have two questions about one of the very well-known assessment in Malaysia, which is SPM.
Firstly, is this examination still relevant in these days?

it depends.... if we were to stop having the SPM, we need to have a better alternative that is even better than SPM. (the SBA is some what of a mix - standardized and localized); so as long as we do not have a truly 100% standardized exam, I think the MOE will still use SPM (albeit an improved one).

We could see that our country slowly moved to the School-Based Assessment System and we have seen a reduction in the importance of exam results, emphasizing more on the holistic students idea.
If this is the future of our education, how the reports from the School-Based Assessment System could be the ticket for the admission to University?
There may be some truth or valid to your views and arguments. But as I am now not in schools directly, I could not comment much on how the SBA results from schools are used to, say, affect or impact scores from the SPM. (ie. how the combination are calculated or how these 2 different set of marks are merged). That is for the MOE to respond. But IF the SBA are done well and done accurately, there is no reason as to why "student learning" cannot be ascertain validly/reliably.

I would love to hear your opinion regarding this.

Warm regards,
Nor Adila Adha Saadon (1823088)
Rasyidah Ahmad Saidi (1814408)

Assalamualaikum W.B.T

Dear Dr. Joe,
First of all, we would like to thank you for suggesting us to ask questions regarding what we do not understand.

Actually as a future teacher, I feel scared when I teach students and they don’t understand or don’t get good results in exam.

I will feel guilty and blame myself. Although I have tried my best but they are not yet destined to master it.

So my question is, how can I avoid thinking like this?
I would love to look into your view and calm words about my thought.

Thank you in advance :)
Ummul Karmila binti Jamary (1813672)
Siti Najihah binti Norman (1818058)

ok, good one. there are a few things you need to know and understand:-

a. you are not an experienced teacher when you first started your career.

b. you cannot determine the outcome per se especially when it comes to teaching. you can try your best using all the methodologies, but it is not a 1 way street. students need to also help and make it a 2 way street.

c. you need to also have good effective support group. colleagues, peers, seniors and especially loved ones/family and friends.

so, in a nutshell, it is a OK to feel uncertain. to feel bad if (in your perception) students do not learn well, etc, etc. ALL these things will come to pass and over time, you will GAIN the crucial skills, competencies and confidence that is part of the job! insyaAllah.

Assalamualaikum Dr. Joe,

We are curious about one thing regarding the examination. Why our answer sheets of examination in university was not given back to the students after it was marked?

Because, if it is returned back, then students can see which part they got it wrong and the things that they can be improved. Because sometimes we didn't realize that we keep doing the same mistakes.

good question. Actually ALL assignments (as forms of assessment evidences), not just final exam should (best be) given back.

But one possible reason/argument for not giving back FINAL EXAM scripts are that, 'there might not be any improvements left' since after final exam the course is over. (I know this is not quite a good reason), but to be honest- that's the reality.

Siti Amirah binti Mohd Ishak 1817672
Suhaila Afiqah binti Mohd Nasir 1827418

Assalamualaikum wbt.

Dear Dr. Joe,
May this question finds you in the best health.

I have a difficulty in distinguish between Project Based-Learning (PBL) and Problem Based-Learning (PBL) which both are used for assessment. Am I right, Dr.?

ok, FOCUS on the word used.

1. project - you need to come out with a concrete/physical product after finishing the project based learning.

2.

Dear Dr Joe, may you be in good condition.

Since all the students from primary to secondary and university are learning online now, the approach of learning style and assessment might have some changes too. But looking at my brother in Standard 4, the assessment given always about copying the text over and over. Write down the notes that had been sent in the WhatsApp group. So I am not sure how far the assessment (write the notes) can help to enhance potential of student's learning during online learning and what is the other effective assessment for students besides writing the notes

This is about how a teacher of Islamic education can evaluate the knowledge and understanding of their students regarding the topics such as "Islamic history" just by teaching and story telling to them. I know that sometimes they tried to do their best to achieve their best teaching outcome. However for me, for some event in Islam, I still have confuse.
