Many people state that Paralympians get an advantage over able bodied athletes in competitive sports, including track and field. The main cause of concern in this would be the type of prosthetic being used called the Flex-Foot Cheetah. According to Karina Hamalainen, "Double leg amputees burn pretty much the same amount of calories and has about the same endurance at their top speed as able bodied runners. The bent part of the blade stores energy while the Achilles tendon does the same for a natural leg, and both release the energy when pushing off of the ground. The amputees use their gluteus maximus and quadriceps to move their prosthetic legs, and able bodied runners use the same muscles to move their legs." This research states that amputees with blade prosthetics use the exact same amount of energy as able bodied competitors, as well as, using the exact same muscles to move their legs. This shows that amputees do not have an advantage in races or sports in general over able bodied athletes. It shows that just because amputees are missing some limbs such as a leg or even both legs they are not at a different level athletically in sports.

Here in the United States, we are a free country. Along with being a free country, we are allowed to make our own decisions. While no one can make you do something you are against, you should always look at the strong medical evidence on what you claim to be against. According to Harvard International Review staff writer Michaela Nesson in her academic journal, “Today, immunization prevents two to three million deaths annually” (Nesson, 2016). Nesson is saying this because she wants everyone, from all over the world, the realize that this is a very high number, that people should not dismiss. Throughout the entirety of human existence, we have been dealing with several contagious and potentially dangerous diseases. Through science, we have found vaccines that can help fight major diseases, and eradicated several different diseases. However, as time goes on, people are now starting to refuse vaccinating their kids, for personal and unproven reasons. If this pattern of people opting out of immunizations continues, it puts a real threat on the health of people all over the world.

As technology advances more and more people begin to enter the world of social media; posting what seems to be their entire life. However, along with that, they are entering a dark world that can lead to many problems later in life. According to Strategist Clarissa Silva from HUFFPOST, “60% of people are using social media and have reported that it has impacted their self esteem in a negative manner” (Silva 2017). Silva is informing us that over half of the world’s population is suffering with self esteem issues from using sites such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.. Silva also states, “Social media was linked to higher loneliness, envy, anxiety, depression, narcissism, decreased social skills” (Silva 2017). People all throughout the world are suffering from mental health issues every day that we do not see. We are never truly alone, even if we might think we are. If the trend of “most posts continuing to feature thin, young, white, women” (LaMarre 2019) then people will never gain confidence in themselves, and learn to love their own bodies.

There has been a lot of talk in recent years regarding the legalization of marijuana. Marijuana is not only helpful in the medical field, but it also can be economically beneficial. In his 2012 article, “Legalizing Marijuana Would Save Money and Generate Tax Revenue.”, Jeffrey Miron stated that legalizing marijuana would generate large tax revenue. Specifically that,” approximately $2.4 billion could be made if marijuana was taxed like all other goods.” In fact, “ $6.4 billion could be made annually if marijuana was taxed at rates comparable to alcohol and tobacco.”(Miron 2012). He is saying that if marijuana and marijuana products were to be taxed that there would be a large profit in tax revenue. It could potentially be very beneficial if marijuana was taxed considering how much money would be made. Not only about the money that would be made but there would be money no longer being spent trying to enforce the law banning Marijuana.

Preserving DNA for testing should be an enforced law at all crime scenes. 12.6 percent of cases had DNA evidence that would support a claim of wrongful conviction. “Post-Conviction DNA Testing and Wrongful Conviction,” which presented an estimated rate of wrongful conviction based on post-conviction DNA testing of over 700 felony convictions in the state of Virginia between 1973 and 1987. These findings relied primarily on original forensic testing documents and post-conviction DNA testing reports to identify convictions that were strengthened or weakened by new DNA evidence. These documents contained data on victim and suspect demographics, case progression dates, original forensic collection and testing, and post-conviction DNA testing. This evidence shows that testing is a huge part in figuring out who is guilty vs innocent in a trial. These percentages prove that DNA testing would be beneficial.
