The Boy in Striped Pyjamas released in 2008, is a story that is set in WWII. The story is shown through an 8 year olds (Bruno) perceptive, who lives under the commandments of the German Nazi party. His forbidden friendship with a young Jewish boy who is located in a concentration camp, has startling and unexpected consequences.

Within this captivating, historic film, behaviour, thoughts and feelings reflect how social influence and concepts such as bystander affect, obedience, compliance, social Inhibition, social facilitation, conformity, altruism and deindivisulisation can affect an individual.

Obedience

Obedience occurs when someone with higher authority tells us to do something and in response we change our behaviour and beliefs due to their influence (Carter, 2005). In the above scene, the Jewish worker is forced to find an old tire and help Bruno build a swing. The thought of having undesirable consequences due to disobeying someone in authority has a powerful influence over ones decisions, because although the Jewish man was treated unfairly, he was still obedient. The Jews within WWII had learnt to obey and behave in a certain way when surrounded with Nazis because the fear of violence, aggression or death was heavily portrayed towards by Jews, if not obeying the rules.

Conformity

Conformity is a type of social influence that affects or changes an individuals behaviour or belief in order to fit in with a group (McLeod, 2016). The pressure of others is the main cause of conformity as the desire to be liked or having to conform to a social role, is stronger than acting upon what an individual believes.

Conformity is portrayed within The Boy in Striped Pyjamas, when Bruno's sister (Gretel) embraces Nazism through the change in personality, behaviour and her interests. Within the beginning of the movie, we understand Gretel to be a stereotypical young girl who interested in dolls and dresses. But as the movie progresses she is influenced by the Nazi leaders in her life (her father). This is evident as she disposes of her dolls and girly behaviours to a fascination about the war, Hitler and her behaviour becomes more aggressive towards her family. As she is consistently surrounded by Nazism she conforms into the pressures of social norms and higher authority.

Compliance involves the changing of ones behaviour in response to ones request to do so, but it does not necessarily involve an authority figure (Carter, 2005). This scene shows the compliance of Gretel and Bruno even though the teacher is not an authority figure but is hired by their father. As Gretel reads the laws of Germany, Bruno understands them to be biased from a Germans perspective against the Jews, but complies to the social norm of following the request of the Nazis.

Altruism

Altruism is a prosocial behaviour where the motive to help another is totally selfless. It refers to the desire to benefit others for their own sake, without seeking personal gains or rewards (Batson, 1998). Within The Boy in Striped Pyjamas, Bruno meets a young Jewish Boy, Shmuel who is entrapped behind the fence of a concentration camp. Bruno's altruistic act is to create happiness for Shmuel through playing games, bringing food to share and creating jokes to encourage smiles. As Bruno is a wealthy German, who can easily disregard Shmuel, he becomes a genuine altruistic person that creates happiness for someone who is being treated unfairly, selflessly.

Bystander Effect

The bystander effect is the tendency for individuals to be less likely to help a person in need, when others are present in comparison to when they are alone (Carter 2005). Within the above scene the Jewish man witnesses Bruno falling off of the tire swing. As he was the only one who had seen what had happened, he quickly rushed over to Bruno to help. If there had been other bystanders who had seen Bruno become injured, it is more than likely that the Jew would have continued his work and enable someone else to take care of him. It is apparent that the Jew was medically trained and knew how to take care of the wound but as soon as Brunos mother came home, his behaviour became more discrete due to her influence of authority.

Deindivisulisation

Deindivisulisation is a key theme represented within The Boy in Striped Pyjamas as the Jewish lose their individual identity. Within WWII, the Jewish were seen as less than human, with their simple rights stripped away and forced to be segregated through, uniforms, numbers, shaved heads and wearing the Star of David. Towards the end of this above scene, it is identified how poorly the Jews were treated and how the shift of attention from the Germans had changed from seeing individuals to a representation of a group. Another factor to deindivisulisation is the anonymity in a group, which is also present within this scene. When people feel anonymous or invisible, they alter their behaviour and actions. The Jews knew if they didn't obey the rules than consequence would occur, so they changed their individual actions to 'fit in' with the group.

Aggression is as a key theme represented throughout The Boy in Striped Pyjamas. As aggression is any behaviour intended to physically or psychologically harm another, the intention of the Germans were to treat Jewish inhumanly (Grivas, 2005). This above scene portrays the events of psychological harm, as the German soldier intended to cause fear within the young Jewish boy to further portray this social norm of Germans having authority. Due to this fear from aggressive behaviour, the Jewish won't retaliate in a way that would cause harm, keeping those with higher authority in power.
