Flume AKA Harley Streten is an EDM producer from the northern beaches of Sydney, I often wonder which NRL team he supports if he even watches the NRL at all, Harley has often been regarded as the pioneer of Future Bass music and helped popularise it. I would characterise Harleys sound as wonky beats, airy chords, beautiful melodies, I feel very inspired by flume because he has brought aspects of genres and mashed them together and made it his own genre, he quoted in an early video that he called his music genre “Flumestep”. I also feel I can relate to him as he said in the My Friend podcast with Paige Elkington interview that he has anxiety and doesn’t like a lot of attention . Harleys sound design is one of a kind and even the simplest of sounds are quite intricate. He one said in an interview that he limited himself to only a few synth plugins so he could really master the synths and then he would be able to make whatever sound he could think of. This inspired me to limit my synth plugins and really learn the basics of sound design. Harleys music inspires me to experiment with different sounds and make intricate drum beats and not to stick to one genre.

Virtual Riot AKA Valentine Brunn is an EDM producer from Germany. Valentine makes a wide range of genres mostly though he is mostly known for his heavy and melodic dubstep. I aspire to be able to make metallic bass sounds like valentine as well as have a good knowledge of synthesis. His knowledge of music theory has inspired me to learn a little bit of theory so I would be able to make chords and melody in different scales as well as pitch samples into key if needed. Valentine learned piano when was younger, he later learned music theory when he learned how to play the church organ. I enjoy listening to Valetines music and he inspires me to try out new musical ideas, experiment with synths and not stick to one genre.

Baauer AKA Harry “Bauer” Rodriguez is an American record producer and has produced song for Pusha T, Oliver Tree, and Tom Morello to name a few, Harry also has remixed songs from the prodigy, The Gorillaz, Flume, and Shlohmo and many more. Harrys musical style is more Trap with a few other genres mixed in, I love the way his drums are very intricate and he uses a bunch of different sounds from around the world to incorporate into his music, in a redbull short documentary in 2014 he went to different cultures around the world and recorded allot of different sounds, he also made a sample pack out of these sounds he recorded and put it on the internet for free. I’m really inspired by Harry for using peculiar sounds in his music and I use some of the sound in the sample pack he released in mu music and experiment with them to make something entirely different. Harry inspires me to not just stick to one genre and experiment.

Early inspirations for Flume are Flying Lotus, J Dilla and Moby. Flume mentioned in an early interview with ‘Vice’ that he is inspired “Flying Lotus, J Dilla, and Moby for their forward thinking-ness, and the idea that imperfection is perfection.” (Vice, 2013) Flume admits in the interview that he uses this rule extensively in his music, describing that he wanted a to have an “human, organic feel” using hip hop as to give his drums swing. (Rollingstone, 2016)

J Dilla is a Hip-hop producer and has inspired many artists, including as I’ve included, Flume. J Dillas’ drums were very unquantized, and I feel that this gives his drums a more human feel. This ‘human feel’ is something else that Flume has mentioned inspires his music.

In an interview with Hypebeast in 2016, he states that “I find it fascinating, all the new equipment you can get these days and the sounds that technology can create.” (Hypebeast, 2016)

In Flumes’ interview with Mixmag he further references this inspiration. Speaking of how he played saxophone when he was younger, Flume says that he loves the ability of creating music and sounds on his computer that have literally never been heard before and that he could never create by playing his saxophone. Flume says “So, that’s for me, the most exciting part of electronic music”. (Mixmag, 2019)

This really inspires Flume because he says it gets him out of his comfort zone.

Flume said in an interview with Time that when he becomes too comfortable he becomes uninspired and that he needs to feel out of his comfort zone and travel to different places in order to feel inspired. This is exactly what he did when he was finishing his album Skin. While finishing his album skin he felt under pressure as his deadline approached so he travelled to Mexico alone for his birthday. He found this quite productive and finished up the album that week. He also talked about a time he went to Tasmania by himself and just drove around national parks to get inspiration.

He stated that he understood how both Kayne West and Kurt Cobain must have felt.

This has influenced the work he has done since and he says he has purposefully messed with his sounds more.
