Mulligan presents working on a rubbish dump as something which becomes an identity. “My name is Raphael Fernandez and I am a dumpsite boy.” This shows that Rapheal identifies first and foremost as a dumpsite boy, yet although this should be a negative thing, his tone appears light and cheerful. He is tolerant of his situation which makes the reader empathise with him, as he should not have to deal with such things at a young age. This also suggests this is all Raphael has ever known and this links to the fact that many people in real life are born and live on rubbish dumps. Many people who live and work on rubbish dumps around the world, can often be identified by the smell which constantly lingers on them and therefore segregates them from society and ostracises them from the other classes. This links to the presentation of Raphael and the belief that he is defined by his life on the rubbish dump.

Mulligan presents working in a dump site as hard work and messy. “Crawl and crawl, sort and sort” This tells me that it is hard work because they seem to crawl around a lot in the rubbish searching for things such as plastic and rubbish what could be used again for money. It also seems hard work because in the quote “crawl and crawl, sort and sort” it shows they are sorting through a lot of rubbish a day to sell. It also tells me it’s messy because normally in dump sites it’s messy and in the book and in real life that there’s lots of broken objects and everyone who works in the dump site will have to crawl through the rubbish and get messy. They also may not have a lot of clothes to change into and they can’t wash properly.

Andy Mulligan presents working on a rubbish dump as busy. I know this because in the text it says “Trucks and trains never stop and nor do we” This suggests that everyone is constantly working hard, scavenging for things they could sell. This implies that they are poor and in need of money as they are working and living in unclean conditions. This also shows us that the dumpsite can never run out of trash as the trucks and trains are always bringing in trash into the dumpsite.

Andy Mulligan represents working in the dumpsite as a job that becomes a part of your personality and your life "My name is Raphael Fernandez and I'm a dumpsite boy" shows that. I think that Mulligan represents this by making the main character (Raphael) refer to his job on the dumpsite throughout the book. The book is very realistic to what actually dumpsite life would like for some children so I think that Mulligan is trying to educate others about what it is like on the dumpsite and that some days can be rough but you can find something exciting in life and to enjoy it as a mystery.

Andy mulligan Presents the rubbish dumps as terrible and very bad. In the text it says “crawl and crawl, sort and sort”. This says that they work all day and don’t stop. In the text it also says that they normally find bags full of poo. This can tell us that they would smell terrible and be able to wash properly for many days. We also find out that there are many people doing this and some children even live under or on the trash. The people who do live in houses are in very cramped conditions.

Andy Mulligan presents working on a dumpsite to being different to the ideal lifestyle. “one mans trash is another mans treasure” shows that the people who work on dumpsites treasure the little pieces of litter and rubbish they scavenge for, that other people in the city who have houses, food, paying jobs and money think is worthless. The quote “a cigarette carton, with a cigarette inside- that’s a bonus” shows us that they cherish the little things they find. This could also suggest that the people who work on dumpsites are poor as they say it’s “a bonus” to find a un-used cigarette still in its packaging. I think that this book is helpful to more fortunate families to to educate them about different lifestyles and how other people live as most children and even some adults don’t actually know how lucky they are to have other children’s dreams.

This shows that it is a day to day lifestyle while trying not to get ill from all the diseases that live on the dumpsite. As well "You live day to day" says that they are most likely very poor and they probably take shelter from the city and so that they don't get beaten up by people." Hope you don't get sick" implies that it is a disgusting environment as well as them probably not having good hygiene or sustainable clothing.

At the beginning of the chapter, Mulligan introduces the character by name and states 'I am a dumpsite boy'. This suggests that he is using it as a job title for someone working on a rubbish dump. He presents the job as not very nice as he makes reference to peoples' trash and that he has been finding it for many years, which suggests that it is a daily routine of sorting through other people's rubbish. Mulligan compares the amount of rubbish to the Himalayas, which suggests that it is hard work on a rubbish dump as there is endless 'mountains' of rubbish to go through. He also says that it is 'all day, sun or rain' so no matter what the weather they are always out there working. He links this to working on a real life rubbish dump as he suggests that they are always looking for something valuable that can be sold. As the people are poorly dressed and have no shoes, they are looking for valuable materials to try and make money and improve their lifestyle.

'crawl and crawl, sort and sort' shows that the people working on the dumpsite never stop going through the rubbish. the phrase ' you live day to day and hope you don't get sick' , shows that they have to go live with the diseases and the workers probably don't care if they get sick because all they want is the kids to be working as the workers get the money from it. You also know that everybody who works on the dumpsite is extremely poor and no child should have there childhood crawling through rubbish.

Mulligan shows the dump site in the book realistically the quote “ dump trucks never stop coming.” Which shows how busy they actually are. The working conditions on the dump site would be absolutely appalling and I find it surprising how the main character (Raphael) is able to put in hours working on the rubbish dump for some money
