It is ture that I am not up-to-date in all the possible careers in scientific fields, but my students (secondary school students) are already not interested in such fields. Moreover, I have not enough time to illustrate, during my Maths or Phsysics lessons, career opportunities, or emerging jobs in scientific fields.

I think students should know the job opportunities more than focusing exams and grades. If they aware of the impact on future life of school, they will be motivated to participate the lesson. Councilling might be very positive in school. Students are not aware of the future opportunities offered by their studies, but sometimes neither teachers are enough up to date to give students proper informations. Sometimes school have not enough funds to employ such a specific figure in their staff, but I think a solution might be the organisation of regular meetings with professional figures which could inform learners about the possibilities in their hands

None of the above mentioned STEM career guidance are present in schools in Greece. What I would realy appreciated finding before study my proffesion would have been the Teacher Knowledge of Scientist Career. There was something named like that during my school years but had nothing to do with it. A regular teacher with no experiance or knowledge, was trying to give us information (which sometimes were actually wrong) about STEM.

In my school there isn't a STEM career guidance and even if I teach in a primary school I think it might be very positive to have a counselor. Most of the students aren't aware of the opportunuty offered by the STEM careers and that can fizzles out their motivation and their interest in the scientific subjects. In my lessons I often referred to the scientists jobs and my children (6 years old) are always excited when I show them some video about astronauts.

I consider that it is very hard to connect our students with the reality, with their future. Some of them have low perspective for themselves, and they are only 11 or 12 years old! The Economic crisis is guilty as our pupils sometimes say "We know people with degrees but they are waiters". Apart from the low-motivation, teachers have to fight against some parents who try to over protect their children, so at the end of the childhood we find teenegers without autonomy but with a high ego. So yes, to lead our students to STEM careers is difficult nowadays but we can count with other advantages, as children nowadays are used to new technologies and they are more willing to work with them.

The most present challenge in my daily activities is the lack of resources. For schools to be able to teach up-to-date science issues (especially modern technological issues) there is an urgent need of investment (computers, technology, teacher formation) that governments cannot (or prefer not to) make.

Career guidance in school is very important only if teachers also engage the students who might not have been interested in STEM studies. So we have to show them that behind the subjects that they are learning there are actual job. As I read your ideas, dear colleagues, me and my cooworkes need to be really thankful. We are working for second year in a new building with very good equippement. Our school is surrounded by the campus of the University on Tartu and therefore we have very good cooperation with third parties. I included the introductory video about our study branches for fun (it is in estonian, sorry). Where is the problem then? I am not a STEM teacher by myself. But I see my colleagues struggeling in very busy schedule to create new innovative methods. It is much easier just to use textbooks and workbooks. And these materials are not supportive to new way of learning. Time and supportive materials are serious issues.

The problems I face are basically two: the lack of resources and the lack o consideration that STEM subjects have in spanish school community..
To solve this situation is necessary to invest on schools, and teach teachers on the importance of STEM, giving them the tools to overcome this situation.
In my country there is a small group of scientist of CSIC doing their best forming teachers on how to teach science in the best way, they are great, but bigger efforts have to be made from the administrations.

I don´t think resources are the problem. Internet is full of them! We need to curate STEM resources, that´s a goal. Or a textbook can be a useful resource ;-)
In my experience, students have real problems to connect what they study with real live problems. So Project Based Learning is a great solution involving other knowledge areas apart of mine (Maths) in order of challenging students in finding solutions or investigating about real facts.

Fortunately I had job experiences both in research and in industry before I began teaching. Even if I know that things are quickly changing, I think that this can help me. I try to show (for each argument and subject) the real application. I think that a continuous relationship with research and industry world is useful. In my opinion, most of STEM subjects must be about the real issues that are applicable. In school I teach in a contest of applied physics 20 students were rated highly. I think it's an important step. Teachers that make practtical applications are an example for other colleagues who are just for theory.

Students should be guided to discover their abilities, skills, passion for science from elementary school. It is good for the teacher to work with the family to determine the student to find small jobs in STEM fields and find ways to make learning materials more attractive to attract children, their curiosity.

Science teacher and Math teacher knows those subjects very well, they have spent years to master those topics and they are very good at teaching, explaining the key concept to student. However, some may lack of the real world experience (one has only 24 hours, difficult to master both). For eg, the text book may cover what is big data but may not specify the relationship with Math, or the latest tool in the market; the text book may cover Arduino but may not list down the latest HW shield. In my humble opinion, (i) more hands-on projects for students and (ii) invite working professional (including scientist) back to school and share the experience. Most people, including teachers, tend to have very little knowledge about this particular field let alone information about possible related careers. Well, all of them are more or less present one time or the other. I try to be updated in the STEM careers, but most of them are far from my field of expertice, so it is a huge effort. The classroom resources are not up to us as teachers, most of the times. If you are lucky, and you have them, and they work, and you know how to use them, then that challenge is overcome! And finally, of course, the access of students to the research environment and to the real companies is crucial. Sometimes is easy, and sometimes is almost impossible...

Challenges: The challenges that we as educator experience range from curricular restrictions, time limitations, personal knowledge on science careers and general mentality. It is up to the individual teacher to find the when and how career information is infused during the science lessons and therefore these are sometime not adequately represented. Moreover, educators do not necessarily know about all the STEM careers that are available thus in service training is a must here. Overcoming Challenges: We also have career advisers and guidance teacher that aid pupils during the option exercise. The best way we are currently trying to overcome these challenges is through the Teen Science Cafe initiative where we bring STEM professionals to schools and the pupils can ask questions to them thus linking the careers out there with the educational system.

I think that most of the teachers in Spain find too m uch complicated trying to give a paralell practical vision of the curriculum concepts because most of us weren't teached this way. We have no career counselor in my school, and as it is a middle school maybe it is not so important. However I think that at this age, 11 to 14, teachers can have an important role in making science loved by students. Dealing with ICT and computer science it is imperative for me to give the students tasks similar to what they will find in the real world. If for example they show huge skills using Excel, I usually try to connect the student to an area where he would like to work and therefore give him a task related to that. In Biology and Geology teaching it is very easy connect theorical concepts and real life.
In the laboratory, with the scientific method, the students work in pairs and they could confirm the previous theorical process explanation, also they could obtain new perspectives or arguments.

I think that a big problem is the way we educate and get education which is so wide. Todays' science is no longer: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics ... in fact, it is many branches of those five. But if you want to get PhD in one of them you need to pass all branches of for example Physics. And you end up in only one branch. You forget the most of other knowledges you got, and then you ask yourself a classical question "Why did I have to learn all this?". I´m a teacher of Primary Education. In my opinion the big problem is the extensive curriculum content and the high number of student in each classroom that impides to do more activities in a different way.
From my point of view, supporting student access to science professional and worksites is one of the most important challenge for a teacher. An example to overcome this challenge could be to appoint a coordinator, dedicated exclusively to these tasks, to facilitate encounters, visits,etc.
With these kind of activities, out of school, we contextualize teaching and learning is easier for children.

Knowledge of science careeres.

Even though I have two scientists at home I know little about science careers. But as they always repeat - it is the way of thinking, solving problems, finding a new angle to look at things - this is what makes them scientists. But it is too abstract for children at school. As a foreign language teacher I usually support the need of communication, especially in science careers where the whole scientific literature is in English.
2. Classroom resources.

I found money to equip my classroom with tablets and insisted on permanent internet access at school. We had several videoconferences allowing children contact with some professionals - not scientists though. But if I had classroom resourses connected with science... Maybe I can change my classroom design from multicultural place to science lab...
3. Access to science professionals
In my school there was a great response to the action promoted by the ministry about making students aware of different jobs. We invited our parents to have meetings with children telling them about their professional life. Among the others we had some scientists who had workshops. Our school is in the capital so we can also visit universities. We take oportunity to participate in science festivals or invite professionals to our school.

I can take a small example. During the technology and design course, students are doing in the classroom a real task. They drew their ideal apartment (5 or more rooms) scaled down to 1:20. At first I gave the measurements of the walls and furnishings. Then they learned on their own. They have rooms according to the exposure of the cardinal points, calculate the cost of flooring, electrical system and the heating, evaluate their saving and eco-sustainability choices. Then they will meet an architect, a real estate agent, a technician for a valuation of their work. My student crawl to get good grades, to finish final exams well, so that they can choose faculty of their liking. They mostly dont think to be a doctor, a scientist, a pilot etc...Guidence of their career is somewhere at the back.

In my Tic classes with younger students, the biggest difficulty I have is the little importance that the ministry of education attributed to the discipline, where I have 45 minutes a week with classes of up to 30 students. Students do not see ICT as a necessity in their work / academic market but as a mere joke factor, being difficult in such a short time to make them realize the real importance of the discipline. During my classes, I make references to the professions of the scientific-technical branch with practical examples, and I also make them to those related to safety and hygiene at work in order to generate some closeness between the contents and the real world.
I also encourage them to carry out projects by testing their creativity and ability to solve setbacks, since I think that this way makes them feel self sufficient and increases their confidence. Self-confidence increasing is really necessary because one of the reasons of rejecting STEM studies is that they consider them extremely difficult. In addition, especially in the more advanced courses, I spend some time searching with my students the academic offer, explaining what are they about and what types of work can be carried out when entering the laboural world. Anyway, I think it would be great to have a career counselor to advise them.

The school in which I work does not have a careers officer but has a member of teaching staff whose secondary role is as a careers advisor. In addition this role is usually given to an arts teacher. Over the last two years I have tried to work alongside this member of staff to raise awareness of science careers. This was in response to students complaining that all the careers based activities within school were arts based primarily because the school careers advisor is arts trained. Within the biology department we have organised outside speakers to talk to the students about their career and invited the same speakers to attend an informal lunch with students to chat about career options and pose any questions they may have. These happened before but were either with business or law professionals. I think it is imperative to have a member of staff whose background is science to advise students on science careers. Pewrhaps it would be beneficial to have a careers team rather than just one careers advisor. The team should be made up of staff members with differing specialities so that students are obtaining advice whether that be in science or the arts from the most appropriate source.

In our school we are very conscious with the role STEM carrers play in our society. We have been celebrating for the last four years a Science Week in January. We create a career guidance calender with all the planned career internvetions to follow through with our students. This entails activities such as: talks with professionals from different fields who are invited to our schools; careers fair; choice of subjects fair where students and parents get to meet different subject teachers prior to choice their subjects; career exposure experiences where first, our 14/15 year old students are taught interviewing skills and how to write a CV and then sit for an interview. Eventually they are given a 1 week placement according to their ranking in the interview and according to their choice of subjects (could be STEM studies), where they spend a whole week job shadowing a career which is of interest to them. They are also given a reflective logbook to jot down their daily observations and reflections. These will then be discussed in group interventions.

As a primary school teacher, the students develop their stem awereness with manual activities. Those type of manual activities which make that kids want to do more new and fascinating activities like discovering, experimenting and making hypothesis.

In my daily profession activities, I try students show direct interest and motivation to interact with the subjects matter.

Before I will teach, I have to enjoy with the experience with a previous self-test . So, my premisa is "enjoy and experiment things that you want to know". It gives them more self-efficace.
Everyday, they embed reflexion in the class when they make activities of visible thinkings , for example: thinking routines, chess, robotic, science corner or cooperative work.

Making clear connections between they are learning and the real-life use of the kids, to giving examples of how it connects science and reality.

I agree with all the ideas they discuss in this article, including the difficulty we have of having updated knowledge of the different studies our students will be able to choose; they are constantly changing. The most prevalent issues are access to real ''on the job experience for students. There are highly competitive placements available or work experience you can pay for but for the average student it's not accessible. I am also unaware of specific areas that struggle to recruit and don't have access to information about the specifics of many career areas. There's also a lack of aspiration amongst some students to put the effort required into attaining the grades for such careers. I try to overcome these issues through taking students out of school to learn from industry professionals or staff in museums, botanic gardens, zoos etc. but it's difficult to find the time to provide these experiences and complete courses. Regular informal links to careers happen in lessons but they're very anecdotal!

The main challenges I think are related with the lack of self-confidence with science tools and with the fact that they seem to be unable of seeing themselves as real scientifics in the future. Solutions? Well, I teach biology, so I explain processes the students easily find in their real life. I try to start always since their knowledge on each topic and the questions they would like to solve. As a math teacher, I always find it difficult when it comes to students' professional orientation in the field of STEM. There is a lack of budget in order to visit scientific labs and bring some scientists into the classroom. Also, at the end of the academic year my students have to go for 3 weeks to a company for a real practical experience into their field of studies and sometimes the company does not do what it is requested (to give some real experience) otherwise the use the students as a cheap labor force.

In my professional activities mostly I focused on awareness and relevance the matter subject and the real life experiences because first of all we should motivate our students and get them the idea why we are doing all these activities why we are learning this information and where we can use all of these and make it personalized. But I have some strengths about engagement and reflective activities because of physical environment and insufficient collaboration among shareholders.

The first challenge is to get that pupils understand that mathematic is the science language and that science is present in every single minute of their lives.

Then, the second challenge is to convince the administration that mathematics are
part of science specialities. As mathematics teacher, even if my professional background is the applied physics and the scientific research, I have realised that usually maths teachers are excluded from science practices, job shadowing, even formation for bilingual education. It is like if maths were out of science.

Last, but not least, I find difficulties to get visits and other activities being accepted by the department and the administration. Again, they don´t imagine mathematical learning out of the classroom.

I think that, in many cases, is very difficult por teachers work the world of STEM in the classroom because a lot of teachers know STEM but they are not be able to teach. In my opinion, the first challenge is that teachers have courses in order to know haow to teach with STEM

In Turkey it is very easy task of convincing boys to take STEM subjects as major at university. Since STEM related professions provide a better and respected future for young people in the society. the major problem is to attract more girls into STEM careers. For this purpose teachers should not directly introduce the topic in classroom; instead they should create an environment where what female scientists have achieved is discussed. Moreover,teachers could make more girls engaged in the scientific projects. When they participate in scientific events, they will interact with the other students and people implementing scientific projects to grasp what sorts of opportunities lying ahead if they take STEM careers.

I think that tecnology changes too fast and that it's hard for me, as, I think, for the most of people who don't work in this field, to keep up with it.

My opinion is that very often teachers don't have enough knowledge of science careers. They stay in schools and don't have much opportunity to see what is going on in enterprises. To overcome it for example our school has a European project where we learn about careers and have visited lots of enterprises.

As an English teacher I have had few opportunities to insert STEM topics in my daily teaching. That's also because I stopped studying science and all the related subjects when I was 18 years old. I did one year of Biology at the university.. but time has been going since then and it's really difficult for me to remember the basics of STEM, even if I have always been really interested in some of its topics. Anyway, since I wanted to relate English to what my students were studying at school, I did teach some STEM contents during my lessons (in particular, coordinates and orienteering and a few things about chemistry and chemical reactions). I used these materials because I understood my students were really interested in them, so I found useful to use these canals to teach English and make it a language of everyday life. I used difende ways of teaching this topics, from reading to ICT materials (videos, presentations etc). What I regard as been greatly useful is rise awareness about the importance of STEM (which I have done) and also give details about future jobs that they can do studying these subjects (which I haven't really done but I want to do in the future). Motivation and engagement are other elements which have a strong impact on the students and their capability to learn.

I think that as a computer science teacher is easier for me to show different strategies and resources than most of the other teachers. Nevertheless sometimes is challenging to show pupils the contents they study and the appliance they can use in the real world (connect theory and practice and show students that science is present every time and everywhere) and keep up with all the news and innovations among us.
