Future me is a great tool that was presented to me on one of Erasmus+ projects I took a part of. I started to use it with last volunteers as a tool to help them go through a difficult period. With this tool they can write future self a letter so they can realize the learning process they went thought, also they will manage to see their personal growth in just few months/weeks. You can also ask them to write letter on paper if they prefer to write old fashion way - by hand. However, if you decide to use web page, they can set up a date in which they will receive their letter to email.

I was interested in exploring a page that we as an organization recently were suggested via email. It is mainly a tool for volunteers themselves, but a lot of tools/tasks, etc. You can share with your volunteers or just use tools from the site itself (such as cleaning schedules if volunteers have a problem with it - I definitely will use it)

Share your personal story (if you have experience) to the volunteers, or introduce them to other stories so they can feel understand, supported and more close to you as a mentor. Here is one of many stories our previous volunteer Evin did with ESC volunteers through podcast series. The volunteers can definitely learn something while watching/listening to other experiences.

Explore their culture to help them explore yours

Explore culture of the country volunteer is coming from, and introduce them to yours. I have the habit to always invite volunteers to my home for holydays. This can make them feel like they belong to new surrounding but in some cases also as a way to explore and adapt to culture. Learning the culture can sometimes be challenging so opening up can help them to open up. Seeing a smile on volunteers faces after/while experiencing first Christmas can give you strength in future mentoring work or help you to solve some future problems or just to remind you why are you mentor <3

This is a tool for planing but also reflection on how things are at this moment. It contains 160 cards that present possible goals and priorities arranged in 10 categories: body; family; friendship/sociability; leisure; love; meaning; money; mood; self and work. Instructions offer six exercises for using cards: pyramid off needs; priority planner; choosing a priority; steps to fulfilment. The cards can be displayed, photographed or kept close to hand as a reminder of the path ahead.

5 different artists with different art styles created a set of 160 illustrations representing 40 feelings in 4 different painting styles. And 96 illustrations of needs in digital design. Together with the cards, comes also a manual in which you can find some suggestions of how to use the cards. The tool was tested during several workshops in Poland and Germany. It can be used to talk about volunteers emotions or needs.
