Other historical information: (How did it happen? How long did it occur?) It happened because of a tsunami following and earthquake which right after the earthquake the active reactors automatically had shut down their sustained fission reactions.

The tsunami had disabled the emergency generators which would have provided power to control and operate the pumps necessary to cool the reactors.

The insufficient cooling had led to three nuclear meltdowns, hydrogen-air explosions and the release of radioactive material in Units 1, 2, and 3 from March 12 to March 15 and the loss of cooling had caused the pool for storing spent fuel from Reactor 4 to overheat on March 15 due to the decay heat from the fuel rods.

What effects were documented as a result of your event?

It had displaced 50,000 households after the radioactive material leaked into the air, soil and sea.

The World Health Organization had released a report that estimates an increase in risk for specific cancers for certain subsets of the population inside the Fukushima Prefecture.

The World Health Organization had predicted that the populations living in the most affected areas that there is a 70% higher risk of developing thyroid cancer for girls as infants, the risk has risen from a lifetime risk of 0.75% to 1.25% chance, there is a 7% higher risk of leukemia in males exposed as infants, a 6% higher risk of breast cancer in females exposed as infants and a 4% higher risk of overall for females to develop solid cancers for females.

The World Health Organizations had determined that group most at risk were infants that were in the most affected area would experience and absolute increase in the risk of all types of cancer during their lifetime of approximately 1% due to the accident.

Anything else you found interesting while researching?

There hasn’t been no fatalities linked to the short term overexposure to radiation reported cause of the Fukushima accident, while approximately 18,500 people had died due to the earthquake and tsunami.

The rates of psychological distress among the evacuated people had rose fivefold compared to the Japanese average due to the experience of the disaster and evacuation.

A screening program in 2012 had found that more than about a third (36%) of children in the Fukushima Prefecture had abnormal growths in their thyroid glands.

But as of August 2013 there had been more than 40 children were newly diagnosed with thyroid cancer and other cancers in the Fukushima prefecture as a whole.

Terrain - Fukushima Basin is created by the surrounding Ou Mountains in the west and the Abukuma Highlands in the east, with the Abukuma River flowing through the center of the basin, from south to north. There is multiple tributaries to the Abukuma River source in the Ou Mountains before flow down into the Fukushima, namely the Surkami, Matsukawa, and the Arakawa rivers. There are multiple lakes that fall within the Bandai-Asahi National Park.

Climate - Under the Koppen climate classification shows that the majority of Fukushima has a humid subtropical climate but however the mountains that line the western border of the city has a humid continental climate.
