The documentary dives into the 9 sides of Earth's foundation that are struggling to remain stable; ocean acidification, stratospheric ocean depletion, aerosols, climate change, deforestation, freshwater use, diminishing biodiversity, and 2 others are unknown. For many sides like biodiversity, climate change, and deforestation we as a population have reached a point where if large corporations continue their harmful practices we will not be able to go back from it. The documentary emphasizes using innovative solutions and the potential for collective action among us all. To restore Earth's balance it takes more than a couple of individuals to influence change. It is a call to action urging industries and civilians to take responsibility and work together to create a better world.

The documentary insists that humans have caused countless destruction of the Earth in many aspects starting at the age of industrialization. We are risking irreversible damage to our planet and the only way to stop it is if we completely halt the practices that are causing it.

The argument is a call to action that urges viewers to take responsibility and engage in action. It emphasizes the importance of sustainability, conservation, and policy changes. Also, the documentary appeals to pathos by using compelling visuals and a narrator to illustrate the scene causing it to pull at heartstrings. There is scientific credibility as many experts in fields surrounding environmental science are presented to show their side of the situation and what can be done to prevent it. Another strength is that the film is on a very popular, widespread content base therefore it'll be able to reach a large audience that can enforce the message. A flaw could be that the film pulls too much at pathos therefore exaggerating the effects and visuals of what occurs because of climate change and its outcomes.

“Breaking Boundaries.” Watch Breaking Boundaries: The Science Of Our Planet | Netflix Official Site, 4 June 2021, https://www.netflix.com/watch/81336476?trackId=255824129&tctx=0%2C0%2Ccabfd71e-8d2a-469a-86bf-b932e42ed1d1-751046675%2Ccabfd71e-8d2a-469a-86bf-b932e42ed1d1-751046675%7C2%2C%2C%2C%2C%2C%2CVideo%3A81336476%2CdetailsPagePlayButton.

Forests are global regulators, and when it became open to the public a map of forest disturbance was shocking to the community. Many people were unaware of the deforestation that occurred throughout the globe. CO2 emissions are added when forests are burned and logged and 1/3 of carbon emissions in total globally are caused by deforestation

The documentary had me questioning the severity of deforestation at large. Becoming curious about the situation I searched "deforestation" and this article appealed to me because of the word "tragedy" since it signifies that it's a drastic conflict. Both relate to each other because Breaking Boundaries discusses how tropical forests like the Amazon are at their breaking point because of the reduction of trees though they absorb our carbon emissions which the issue is troubling if we want them to continue to absorb at a normal rate.

The intended audience is those who are concerned about the environmental conditions of our earth. The main argument is that deforestation is a critical issue that needs to be addressed by governments and industries along with its severe consequences of loss of biodiversity and negative impact on local ecosystems as many of the trees logged is making space for agricultural practices or raising cattle. Strengths are that it highlights the need for immediate change which can influence the viewers to reach out and try to cause change. Also, it uses credibility by using scientific evidence and experts to portray its stance. However, a flaw could be that it oversimplifies the issue not elaborating on the multiple factors and consequences of deforestation.

“The Tragedy Of Deforestation | Climate Change: The Facts | BBC Earth.” YouTube, YouTube, 11 Nov. 2021, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5Fwl4P4EW8.
Amazon Deforestation and Climate Change

The Amazon rainforest is a leading absorber of the world's CO2 emissions, and through the reduction of its land space, there has been a 30% reduction in how much emissions it has absorbed since the 1990s. The rainforest is enriched with vegetation and biodiversity which makes it vital to preserve. The beef industry is rapidly increasing in China by 25% and America being a leading consumer of meat makes the supply and demand of Brazil's meat supply important to the economy globally. This demand is causing an increase in deforestation as more space is needed to raise cattle. The rainforest acts as an air conditioning and sends the heat up to space. If trees are being cut down and diminished then there is a loss of carbon absorption causing it to float into the air we breathe. It is so important we take action now as there is no way out of it because eventually, we will have to face the consequences we created.

Thinking of deforestation as a whole, I began to wonder how the Amazon rainforest was being affected by it. Knowing the rate of deforestation is not decreasing I was curious about what the consequences are concerning it as it's such a vast forest full of biodiversity.

The intended audience is those who are concerned about rainforest deforestation and it addresses the critical role the biome has for cooling our globe and reducing carbon emissions along with the plentiful biodiversity it has. To instill credibility the text uses Antonio Nobre; one of Brazil's leading climate scientists who is an expert on the Amazon. The warning of disaster instills a sense of emergency in the audience to fight for a change in our lumber industry and. a reduction in deforestation. Also, the video uses logos by stating countless statistics and facts to defend their argument. Some strengths are that the use of specific data creates an informative narrative along with the use of a credible source like a climate scientist forms trust between the viewers and them. Spreading awareness of such a relevant topic is necessary in a world full of environmental change. A flaw could be that it doesn't incorporate the other side's position nor elaborate as to why the others would disagree with their stance.

“Amazon Deforestation and Climate Change.” Education, education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/amazon-deforestation-and-climate-change/.
Illegal Logging of the Amazon Rainforest

Illegal logging in Brazil is such a widely common practice that 80-90% of their logging is not done properly therefore it's not sustainable. Many companies do not follow the proper regulations because the employees are most commonly in remote areas therefore there is no pressure to conform to standards as their primary goal is to maximize as much profit as possible. Though illegal logging has been reduced in Columbia, the product is still being smuggled into Brazil and Peru.

Watching the video prior made me wonder why deforestation is still a large issue in Brazil about the Amazon forest. When I was searching why its still occurring I discovered this article about illegal logging. Finding out that 80-90% of logging of the forest is not done legally connected the dots for me about the reasoning there is a massive deconstruction of the rainforest.

The text appeals to the audience's interest by highlighting the urgent issue of logging and it focuses on the environmental consequences. The context emphasizes the importance of regulating and controlling logging practices in the Amazon. The central argument was that illegal practices initiated threats of diminishing biodiversity and tree-land coverage. Also, the text uses persuasive devices like statistics and factual evidence (logos) to emphasize the detrimental effect illegal logging has on the forest biome. The text also has a significant impact on raising awareness of the issue as many would not consider the severity of the situation if not exposed to the scientific data. However, instead of looking entirely at the negative impacts of logging it could also highlight the benefits of sustainable logging and why it should be more heavily reinforced.

“Logging in the Amazon.” WWF, wwf.panda.org/discover/knowledge_hub/where_we_work/amazon/amazon_threats/other_threats/logging_amazon/.
Ozone 101: What Is the Ozone Hole?

The ozone hole is called the Antarctic ozone because it forms over Antarctica. Ozone is a gas that exists in the stratosphere that extends from 8 to 30 miles above the earth's surface. The ozone acts as a sunscreen filtering against our harmful ultraviolet radiation or UV rays which are mainly absorbed in the stratosphere. Without the ozone layer UV radiation would sterilize the Earth. If it is damaged there will be more cases of skin cancer, sunburns, and increased cases of eye damage, the wilting and loss of trees and plants. The vortex acts as a sort of container confining the contents of the Antarctic stratosphere. The ozone hole is more like a thin layer than a hole. If the Antarctic stratosphere stays cold the ozone hole and vortex will persist. Ozone depletion is not natural and is caused by humans it stems from the molecule chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs. There are many types of CFCs though the most common are CFC 11 and CFC 12. In the 1930s production of CFCs began to skyrocket. By the early 1980s, over 300 lbs of CFC 11 alone was being put into the atmosphere. The Montreal Protocol prevented corporations from further damaging the ozone layer which caused

Feeling as though I had finished my journey learning about deforestation and why it occurs I began to get curious about the ozone hole which was mentioned in my core text. I came across this video on Youtube and the channel was by NASA therefore I automatically felt like I could trust what the video said even before seeing it. The ozone layer and hole are related to climate change because increased CO2 emissions leads to a decrease in ozone concentrations in tropical areas.

The audience is likely those who are concerned about our atmosphere. It utilizes scientific facts about the ozone layer, UV radiation, and the impact of ozone depletion. Being aware of where the video is being created is also important in recognizing the ethos of the content. The video is from NASA, a globally recognized corporation that is known for its cutting-edge technology and missions relating to space this is relevant to the video as it pertains to our atmosphere which is on the brink of outer space. A strength of the video is that it gives a clear and concise explanation of the situation and its significance caused by human-induced activities. It also emphasizes the importance of international agreements like the Montreal Protocol. A flaw could be that it oversimplifies the complexities of atmospheric sciences relating to the ozone layer.

“Ozone 101: What Is the Ozone Hole?” YouTube, YouTube, 1 Dec. 2021, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q15t5NQ1Aik.
Understanding Ocean Acidification

Oceans absorb vast amounts of our carbon emissions to help regulate them. However, as our output increases marine ecosystems, reef-building corals, and pteropodsare are negatively impacted. Along with that, the shellfish industry is greatly affected because a phenomenon similar to osteoporosis occurs making it difficult for the sealife to build and maintain their shells. Due to human activity burning fossil fuels like coal, gas, and oil, the ocean's carbon dioxide concentration levels are higher than it has been in over 800,000 years. It is estimated that by the end of the century, the ocean could be 150% more acidic than 20 million years ago. Ocean acidification can cause the pH balance to shift significantly disrupting the natural balance, more toxic algae will be produced and it can create conditions that will harm oysters, clams, and shells. Concerning the shellfish industry, the United State's Pacific Northwest is being hit the hardest along with Alaska fisheries due to their heavy influence in commercial fishing. 20% of the world's population's protein intake is approximately 1/5 fish which implies how necessary it is that we protect our marine species.

Ocean acidification is a crucial aspect of understanding the impacts climate change has on our entire global balance. Not only does it just affect land ecosystems, but marine ones as well. It is important to recognize how detrimental it can be for marine life to have the complete chemical balance be shifted.

The intended audience is individuals who are concerned about marine life and how they are impacted by ocean acidification. The argument the text presents is that change is required to keep a stable balance that's needed for marine life to live and function correctly. The persuasion technique that the NOAA uses is logos when discussing how it affects us in the future, they use it because it is a more impactful statement providing data to back up the claim that it is harmful to the ocean. People will feel more inclined to trust the organization's intentions and credibility as well. The logos used in the article helps to establish the NOAA ethos. A strength is the use of statistics and scientific data to back up the claims they are establishing. However, a flaw could be that when discussing the effects of ocean acidification it could not take into account other human-induced issues that are affecting the ocean.

Fisheries, NOAA. “Understanding Ocean Acidification.” NOAA, www.fisheries.noaa.gov/insight/understanding-ocean-acidification#:~:text=For%20good%20reason%2C%20ocean%20acidification,health%20is%20also%20a%20concern.
