How and how often is technology used in the classroom?

My goal is to use technology in the most meaningful ways, being sure to stay mindful of limiting screen-time. In general, hands-on and social activities are preferred. With that in mind, there are some excellent and motivating resources that we’ll use throughout the year.

Our first technology related priority is a research based and adaptive literacy program called Lexie Core5. We have a limited number of individual student (subscription based) accounts, so only the students who stand to benefit the most from it will get to use it. These students are encouraged to spend a few minutes a day on it.

After our daily Lexia goals are met, our 5 classroom iPads and/or 5 Chromebooks will be used for center rotations during our “star center” time and eventually to publish their writing. Examples of applications that we’ll use as centers include Raz-Kids / Learning A-Z (which reads or provides “just right” books to individual students), ConnectEd (to play math games that are directly tied to our curriculum), SeeSaw (I’ll share more on SeeSaw soon), and Scratch Jr. (for introductory snap-block coding).

We’ll also visit Eberwhite’s computer lab for up to 30 minutes each week. Again, we’ll only use valuable / educational applications as the students gain the fine motor skills needed to use a mouse and keyboard.

In addition, we’ll use GoNoodle movement videos (sparingly) for energizer breaks and indoor recesses.

How does hot lunch ordering work? Do students make their choice (meat or vegetarian) when they order or when they get to the cafeteria?

They don't need to order ahead of time. On our way to the cafeteria at 11:40, they collect their lunch cards from the pocket chart that's hanging just outside of our classroom door. Once they make it to the front of the lunch line, they tell the "lunch lady" what they'd like. There's always a cold-lunch alternative that's pre-packaged. I'm not sure if the alternative is always vegetarian (I wonder if it's included a hard-boiled egg in the past - I'll ask about that).

Aside: It's also worth noting that just in front of the "Hot Lunch Cart" is the "Fruit & Veggie Cart," which always has 3 or 4 options and is free to everyone (thanks PTO?). Students who want to get something from the fruit & veggie cart are welcome to do so after the hot lunch line has cleared out.
