Teaching Differentiated to meet the needs of all learners

1. Personality Test (MBTi and/or The Big 5, or others type of free test which can be found online)

To begin with, I highly recommend that teachers have ‘fun’ with their students at the beginning of the school year by taking a personality test. It is essential for both teachers and students to know themselves and understand others’ personalities. By doing so, there can hopefully be a communal awareness when it comes to, let’s say, collaborative work or certain ‘likes and dislikes’ regarding how students approach different ways of learning.

2. Station working in the class

One interesting thing is that students learn at different speeds and stages. Some might learn much faster, while others might need more time. Those who need more time will also require extra support from teachers. On the other hand, those who learn quickly might be helpful in sharing their knowledge with others or exploring something fun and deeper. Therefore, teachers could redesign their classrooms by setting up several stations: one for group discussion, one for research, one for ‘student support,’ and so on. Students can then be divided according to their needs. If they need support, they can go to the respective station.

3. Differentiated instruction

This is a classic teaching method but always relevant. Stemming from the idea that every student has diverse needs, teachers can design various forms of instruction, including assessments. Similar to what is found in Paper 3, the difficulty level of the questions can be gradual, and/or alternative assessments can allow students to choose according to their needs. Some might prefer individual work, while others might want to work in a group. Additionally, when it comes to teaching, teachers could provide alternative content for those who need more or extra intervention.
