"The ability to relate and communicate effectively when individuals involved in the interaction do not share the same culture, ethnicity, language, or other common experiences."

Intercultural competence is important for teachers and students. Teachers need to continue ongoing learning to learn how to integrate various teaching techniques into the classroom. Students should learn about the global world to learn how to engage with each other - as majority students come from different ethnic backgrounds.

I would inform myself on the cultural habits of the country that the student is going to come from - read and understand how their cultural habits might be different from ours. Instead of saying, "we do it like this here," - be more inclusive and incorporate the students' cultural habits into the lesson. This will allow students to feel more comfortable, and it will reduce their culture shock as well.

How has this area deepened your understanding of culturally responsive pedagogy?

Learning about intercultural competency has deepened my understanding of culturally responsive pedagogy, because it taught me why "understanding culture is an integral component of intercultural competence" (Moeller & Nugent 3). It is important to understand that culture is an "ever-changing force" - therefore, as teachers, we must continue to learn the changing facets of culture. In order to be a culturally responsive educator, we must keep up to date with what the different cultures are, and learn how to incorporate that into our classrooms.
