The main idea of this text is in relation to the fact that due to many modern developments, society as a whole has become less social, hence the title "Anti-Social Century". People are not necessarily more lonely, they are more isolated, meaning that more people are beginning to want to be alone more often. This has caused several issues in society in social, medical, and other ways. Because of this development, the author believes that this trend could have potentially negative repercussions if society does not mend their ability to talk to one another.

As Thompson states, "self-imposed solitude might just be the most important social fact of the 21st century in America." The rapid rise of solitude has lead to several issues developing over the recent years, and as such, have been correlated to both obesity and an increased likelihood to smoke. Solitude has become such a burden on society that countries such as the UK and Japan have started adopting loneliness ministers as a means to help combat these principles. Events such as COVID has caused certain generations to stray from social interaction, which leads them into isolation, where they developed comfort in solutide.

As humans have progressed, so has the technology, and with it, have come issues. Smartphones and social media alike have been linked to negative mental health aspects, and has also been proven to cause harm to young adolescents, possibly stunting development in their maturity and other factors. This is further proven by the fact that there has been roughly a 50% decrease in the in person meet-ups and developments between friends, meaning that many people just consult their phones as a means to interact or talk with others, which does not develop social skills the same way in person interaction does. Furthermore, the unrealistic standards of social media has caused many types of body dysmorphia among adolescents, especially among younger girls, as they are faced with influencers who are oftentimes portrayed as rich, beautiful, and perfect, which of course is completely unrealistic.

Because of this, many Americans started to prioritize different things, meaning that they started to lay and watch TV instead of being productive with their time. This has created somewhat of a bad example for not only other countries, but for the children of these unproductive people, creating a bad foundation for their children's productive development.

While technology can be limiting in the sense that it may not allow people to interact with one another as often, we are overlooking the fact that technology has allowed for a slough of new types of interactions with one another. From facetime, to phone calls, to zoom meetings, there are a number of ways that you are able to talk to your friends, family, and significant others, even if you are across the world at any given point. I think this argument is a strong one, as there are times where it is difficult to be able to meet someone in person, especially if you are constantly working. Having a phone makes conversing a lot more convenient for both parties, and is applicable to everyone.

It truly highlights the relationship that you have with them, and it also demonstrates the time that you both took out of your day so you can connect with one another. Maybe the constant, surface level social interactions people shared beforehand were not as genuine as they are now, which makes spending time with others much more wholesome and pleasant.

I can speak from personal experience when I say this, but I think that a home-base lifestyle was able to afford me a great childhood. My mom being able to work from home has allowed her to raise me to the best of her abilities, and I am forever thankful of all the things that she has done for me. I think that her juggling raising me, work, cleaning, and everything else has given me a reason to push in life, and has also taught me about the work ethic that is needed in today's society. The ideas that she has instilled in me are all because she has been able to work from home, and despite the fact that this kind of lifestyle does not suit others, it has helped my family become closer to one another.

Thompson is warning our generation, hinting at how the negative affects of technology can have a severe negative impact on both the economy as well as our ability to socialize. Disregarding this information is a very fatal mistake, as the construct of society is dependent on people's abilities to not only make connections, but keep them. Being able to socialize and communicate is an essential skill, and without it, humans would not be in the position they are in now. In the end, Thompson's use of evidence is used to drive the idea that solitude and technology (in healthy doses) can be a powerful tool, but can also have severe repercussions if not kept in check.
