Odysseus

One specific fictional character that greatly represents Emerson's "Self-Reliance" is the ancient hero Odysseus from Homer's Odyssey. Odysseus exemplifies Emerson's phrase, "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself." Through all of his journey's and struggles he never once believed he could make it back to Ithaca. Odysseus has already been through Cyclops, giants, and sorcerers before being stranded on Calypso's island. He realizes after escaping Calypso and being swept away by Poseidon that the gods are not exactly making choices in his favor. This leads him to the realization that nothing, even the gods themselves, will bring him peace except for himself. Another direct value of Emerson that Odysseus exemplifies is that of trusting oneself. Odysseus trusts this "iron string" and makes smart decisions as he reaches Ithaca. Him and Telemachus plan ahead their reveal and subsequent siege on the suitors. There are moments of doubt, but Odysseus trusts his plan and succeeds in winning back his home and wife.

One song that reflects Self-Reliance is "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey. Specifically, the lyrics "Working hard to get my fill" model Emerson's belief that only you are in control of your destiny. Through self reliance and hard work, you can reap what you sow. The following lyrics "Everybody wants a thrill. Paying anything to roll the dice, just one more time" very directly seems to be influence by Emerson's claim that most men will "gamble with fortune," however the writer of Don't Stop Believing instead chose to deal with "Cause and Effect" instead of chance.

Beethoven

While he is considered the greatest and most influential classical artist today, Beethoven was actually quite misunderstood during his lifetime. Despite being a musical genius, Beethoven was deaf, causing many to question his work and talent. The frustration of being deaf gave him a strong temper, which only furthered many people's belief that he was simply crazy.
