She has focused on documenting the life of her great-great grandfather, Colonel Marcus Spiegel, a German-Jewish immigrant who became one of the highest-ranking Jewish officers in the Union Army during the Civil War. Jean Soman’s research includes transcribing the voluminous letters Colonel Spiegel wrote to his family during the Civil War. Together with Frank L. Byne, Ms. Soman co-edited the book A Jewish Colonel in the Civil War, Marcus M. Spiegel of the Ohio Volunteers, published in 1995. Her work has also appeared in magazines and newspapers. Jean served as the Acting President of the National, Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission Foundation, was a member of the Advisory Board of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and served on the board of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation.
