Something I Wish I Knew When I Was Younger

For as long as I can remember I have always been anxious when it came to taking a test or quiz. I would prepare weeks in advance because I knew that the minute I was given the test that my mind would just go blank. Today I would tell my younger self that stressing out so much over an exam is not worth it. You should feel prepared enough but not overwork yourself. I would also say that it is perfectly fine to take breaks every once in a while. In the end everything has a way of working itself out one way or another.

Do Not Wait Until Last Minute To Study

There is nothing worse than waiting till the night before to start studying for a test. We have all been there and it is not fun at all. The smart thing to do a little studying each day up until the exam. This gives your brain time to process the new information that is being learned and you also feel less rushed.

Do Not Fall into the Familiarity Trap!

What is the familiarity trap you may ask? Well, basically it is when you feel like you know the material for an exam like the back of your hand so you don't spend time studying it. However, this can be a problem because when you chose not to study a certain section over all the other material, that section could be completely forgotten. The smart thing to do would be to study the sections equally even if you feel like you know it all. Better to be safe than sorry!

Try Quizzing Yourself!

Do you want an effective way to prepare for exams? Try making your own quiz! Studies have shown that taking quizzes promotes "effortful retrieval". This basically means that our brains are working very hard to get the information out in order to answer a specific question. Quizzes and tests are very effective because you are able to quiz yourself on what you know and what you need to spend more time learning. This technique gives students a better grasp of their own progress.

Reasons Why Multiple Choice Tests Are Your Best Friends

When it comes to taking a test, tests that are multiple choice or have multiple choice sections are going to benefit you the most. This is because when students are taking tests it's more difficult for them to go into their memory and retrieve the information right off the top of their head. This is more difficult because it requires your your brain to work harder to recall information that is stored without any reminders. The answers to multiple choice questions are right in front of you, you just have to choose the one that makes the most sense.

The bottom line is that active learning is the best way to learn new material. Active learning means to work hard while working effectively. This may take a lot of effort but, you will thank yourself in the end for doing so.
