101.1 What Music is Played

The Classical music station in my area, Classical 101, plays a variety of orchestral and large symphony pieces. Most of the pieces played are typically older with few newer pieces. Composers like Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Dvorak, Mozart, and Copland are predominantly played on the station. I enjoyed listening to Classical 101 and felt very calm when i listened to it. I listened to the radio station while driving home, and i felt less stressed over the work i had to get done that day.

several pictures adorn the walls of the UNT music building depict various orchestras and solo musicians. These pictures show that the western classical music canon is alive and well represented within UNT. Concert hall such as the Murchison Performing arts center and Voertman concert hall are built specifically for large orchestras to perform the newest music, and pieces of music that we all know and love.

My Definition of the Western Canon

In my opinion, the western canon of music is a compilation of large symphony and orchestral pieces that were the most popular with audiences. Often, the pieces that are most remembered, are written down so that their future performances are nearly identical to the original. After the canon is established, future pieces often try to appeal to the same audience as the larger composers did. Pieces not included in the musical canon are either forgotten about, or scarcely performed.
