A quote from the character

"Then if he's not dead you've got one, haven't you?" This quote tells readers that Scout is somewhat naive. She assumes that Dill has a father just because he isn't dead. She seems to take things very literally just as a little kid would.

A symbol

A symbol that I think represents Scout are her overalls. I believe that the overalls symbolize Scout's dislike for feminine activities and behavior. Considering the time period that the book took place in, Scout would not have been considered a "proper lady" because of the way she dresses, the activities she indulges in, and the people she is with. In the book, Scout can be seen as a tomboy because of her disdain for dresses and favoritism towards pants. In addition to her distaste for dresses, throughout the book, Scout is out adventuring with her brother and Dill rather than playing with dolls with girls her age.

An important action

Miss Caroline embarrasses Walter C. and Scout tries to tell her why, but is punished instead.

This action shows that Scout cares about other people's feelings and is willing to help them. When miss Caroline questions Walter, Scout tries to step in and explain the situation to her so Walter doesn't get too embarrassed. Instead she gets whipped and has to stand in the corner as the class laughs. Although she and Miss Caroline started off on the wrong foot at the beginning of the day, Scout was willing to try and explain why Walter wouldn't take the coin, but Miss Caroline did not appreciate the gesture.

"Dill was becoming something of a trial anyway, following Jem about. He had asked me earlier in the summer to marry him, then he promptly forgot about it. He staked me out, marked as his property, said I was the only girl he would ever love, then he neglected me. I beat him up twice but it did no good, he only grew closer to Jem. They spent days together in the treehouse plotting and planning, calling me only when they needed a third party." (55)

When Jem starts to spend time with Dill, Scouts begins to feel left out and lonely. She gets jealous of their growing bond and doesn't like that they only call her when they need a third person. Although Scout tried to stop the two boys from getting closer, it was to no avail.
