Homer originally wrote it, and it was about a hero (Achilles) who possessed superhuman strength and had conflict with Agamemnon (the king of Mycenae and leader of the Greek army in the Trojan War). Achilles was loved by the Greek people and known for his bravery. He befriends Patroclus and Phoenix, Patroclus who ends up dying at the hands of the enemy in battle. The Trojan War occurred because Zeus wanted to reduce Earth's mortal population, so he instigated tension between the Greeks and the Trojans. Thetis, a goddess of water and his mother, heard of this tale of a normal boy turned a hero and she had to do something about it. When he was just a baby, she dipped him into the River Styx which made his body invulnerable with the exception of his heel because his Thetis was holding him by it. As he grew up, Achilles excelled in many different activities such as hunting. The tale of Achilles was passed down through generations. The story taught people about bravery and how everyone has a weak spot (physically and mentally). The Greeks believed they would have lost the Trojan War without Achilles, so he was their savior. The ancient Greeks believed in their myths so to them, they honored Achilles like we would honor a great president. It was an important part of their culture to share stories from past generations to continue the legend. Not only were these legends the ancient Greek's history, but it also taught significant values and beliefs. For example, Achilles demonstrated courage. Achilles died for the Greeks in the Trojan War. The story also displayed the importance of honesty. Achilles' mom a sea nymph named Thetis, manipulated everyone to try and get Achilles out of the war. She had good intentions (she just wanted to save her son from war), but Thetis still lied and was willing to risk the lives of millions of people. Back then and even now, people could relate to the themes and morals of shown in Achilles. With all their myths, they felt a connection- especially with Achilles which is one reason why it is so popular. The Trojan prince Paris posed as the only threat to Achilles as he was guided by the god Apollo who knew Achilles heel was his weakness. He was assigned to lead a fleet of 50 ships. The ship crashed in Mysia. Mysia was ruled by Telephus, Hercules' son. The Greeks and Telephus battled resulting in the Greeks retreat and Telephus injured by Achilles. Telephus saw a prophet and found out only Achilles could heal him. Telephus explained this to Achilles. Achilles agreed he would heal him if and only if he would assist the Greeks to Troy. Telephus desperately agreed. However, there was another problem- Artemis, the goddess of hunt. Artemis was furious at Achilles. She was informed by Agamemnon (king of Mycenae) that Achilles killed a sacred deer. Artemis caused unfavorable winds which made it impossible for the Greeks to set sail. Artemis told Achilles she would stop the winds, but it would require a human sacrifice.
