One of the books characters I can compare is Joseph, I saw a documentary about what Hitler did and it looked horrific. Like when Joseph's father came back paranoid and scared, that is a real effect of going to the concentration camps. They are truly scary and can often feel as the world is working against them, more like Germany and Hitlers youth and Hitler's officers. I also had to read a book about Anne Frank and her experience trying to stay out of sight. Which the people in Josephs section are trying, especially his father. So they headed on the boat to Cuba to get out of Germany

One way that this book compares themes is how all the characters in the book all have different backgrounds and story's, but they all revolve back to a difficult time. They are also all compared to each other by the violence and the struggles that each family and child has when dealing with the government and their country.

In the story refugee, the main character is Josef who is a boy in World War 2. He is in hiding with his family. His father got taken away. They attempted to take Josef earlier in the story but he did not get taken because he was only a kid. I can compare this to a Father during world war 1 being drafted into the army. He does not have a choice to say no. He has to leave his family behind and risk his life at war.

Josef is very scared of what will happen to his father when he is taken away to a concentration camp. Back in the days when Hitler ruled over Germany, he sent his officers to capture Jewish people from their homes and send them to concentration camps. This happened to Josephs father and didn't see him for a while.
